I have read articles and watched internet speeches made by Lee Foster and I am always amazed about how open he is about explaining the ins and outs of independent publishing. About the Author
Dr. Douglas Goodin, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at UCSF Medical Center, is a neurologist and an internationally renowned expert in the treatment and research of multiple sclerosis.. He earned a bachelor of sciences degree in genetics and biochemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle; a master of sciences degree in molecular biology at Purdue University in Indiana; and a medical degree from the University of California, Irvine. He completed a residency in neurology at UCSF where he joined the medical center staff in 1982. In addition to multiple sclerosis, Goodin's research interests include various forms of dementia. Goodin also is a professor of neurology at UCSF.

Beginning with his subjects' arrival in Berlin to record an album as the Wall was coming down, Flanagan presents U2 as residing at the heart of politics and social change, describing their friendships with Bill Clinton and Salman Rushdie, their extralegal activities on behalf of Greenpeace and their efforts to provoke their massive audience into greater awareness through such projects as nightly updates on the war in Bosnia. Flanagan also encourages band members to spout off their philosophies on everything from music to religion and politics. But then, U2 is an amazing band: four Dublin kids who didn't know how to write songs, let alone play their instruments, but who had a dream. Flanagan treats the band as if they set out on a quest as trying as any traditional hero's journey. He paces their story as fast as their globe-trotting lives and makes it as inspiring as their fans find their music. Even Better Than the Real Thing...

Few books are cool enough to make me want to change careers. This book made me want to drop out of graduate school and become a U2 roadie. Seriously.
Fresh from the "Elevation" Tour, I dove into this book to find out more about the fab four from Dublin. What a treat! This book was absolutely wonderful! Flanagan had un-restricted access to the band during the recording of "Achtung, Baby!" and the entire Zoo TV tour and his closeness with the band shows. While other U2 books focus primarily on the childhoods of the members or early years of the band (see Unforgettable Fire) or are barely more than a collection of sound-bytes from other interviews(see The Road to Pop) this book captures U2 in the middle of their Zoo-glory!
After reading this book, I found myself listening to my old U2 CD's (and going out and buying CD's that I didn't already have!) with a whole new appreciation for the music. Now I listen for the bass contribution, the unique guitar parts, etc.. Knowing the stories behind the songs brings the music to a whole new level. (For those readers/listeners who don't already love "Achtung, Baby!", this book will have you listening to it on a daily basis!)
Flanagan has a remarkable,candid, easy-going writing style that makes this book impossible to put down. While it is a long book, I didn't want it to end! If the author is reading this, PLEASE, for the sake of U2 fans everywhere, write a follow-up! Other U2 books pale by comparison.

The best up-close look at a private band

If you are a true U2 fan this is the book for you! It is impossible to put it down, so much detail into their daily lives and ideas is so amazing. I have always respected U2's privacy and control over their lives, but like all fans, I have yearned to know them better, this book takes you in up close better than all the rest. Read this book first and see if you want to bother buying any others, I wish I had bought it first!

What a Journey!

I stalled reading the last few pages before today because I did not want the adventure and emotion-filled experience of this fascinating book to come to an end. But after reading the last page and closing the book, I had a grateful smile on my face; because then, I could start from the beginning, whenever I want the journey with U2 and the author, Bill Flanagan, to begin all over again.

I REALLY enjoyed this book and I HIGHLY recommend it! A fellow U2 fan mentioned it to me -- being a wide-eyed and newly infatuated enthusiast. Now, I have been progressively addicted in finding out more about them.

This book is a very good and comprehensive start for me. Flanagan's writing style is accessible, funny, entertaining, eloquent, moving, sincere and heartfelt, as he takes the reader up close and personal with the members of U2 (Bono, Edge, Larry, Adam), their affiliates, and the band's many many interesting encounters. Flanagan daringly took me in a journey with them at the end of the world, and I feel myself emerging with an amazing sense of wonder, awe, energy, humility, and profound appreciation.

The book has given me a broad context of understanding U2; artistically, professionally, philosophically, and most of all, as human beings.

The book was published 10 years ago, peppered with reflections of U2's prior first decade. Ten years after the book's publication, as U2 perform in the midst of their 2005 "Vertigo" tour, they both embody and outlive the legacy of the book's spirit.

A very academic approach to web programming

If you are familiar with the author's book (in its many editions) on programming languages, all I can say is that this is written in a similar style - thorough and very academic. There are code examples demonstrating what is being discussed, and there are summaries in each chapter as well as exercises and review questions, but you might be left wondering "what is the big picture here?". It by no means has the programming manual style of an O'Reilly book that often works through one big project - or several of them - as a way of teaching you internet programming principles. The good thing about this book is that the author has covered each subject very thoroughly. The bad thing is that you will need to read the book in short doses digesting each portion slowly as his style is quite academic and each page is densely packed with information. Since the last edition the author has added three chapters covering Ruby, Rails, and Ajax.

I would say this book is OK if you have a pretty good background in programming in C and C++ and already know something about web programming since there is only one preliminary chapter and it is rather vague. If you don't have such a background, let me recommend the various "Head First" books by O'Reilly and Associates on the subject as well as their other various books on web programming. You might wind up with more books and spend more money than if you buy this one, but I think your journey through the world of web programming will probably be more enjoyable and more comprehensible. This book has a great overview of many of the important aspects/languages required to make great web pages. I am currently using this book in a computer science class, and it has been very helpful. The only problem is that it doesn't give many specific examples. This can be overcome though through sites like [...] and [...]

fast-paced, effective overview of multiple web technologies

If you don't have a clue regarding web markup or scripting languages, as in "none", then don't get this book. You won't be able to follow. However, if you have at least written some basic scripts/markup, get ready to do some work (it will be work), and learn tons from this guy.
It's packed with information; a concise summary of nuts and bolts of multiple technologies that go into making a dynamic website.

It's brevity was part of it's challenge for me, and I think for others as well. One user gave 2 stars for "gaps in explanations" but, I strongly disagree with this poor rating. The Preface reads ".. this book is aimed at college students, not necessarily computer science majors, but anyone who has taken at least two courses in programming ... also useful for professional programmers who wish to learn Web programming ... the goal of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive introduction to the programming tools and skills required to build and maintain server sites on the web." I'm keeping it as a reference because the author has done such an exceptional job of covering the rudiments of entire technologies in single chapters.

If you have never even touched Javascript, or PHP, or at least some programming/scripting language, then then this book will be too much work. This book is not an intro to HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, AJAX etc.. It is a densely-packed overview of multiples of them, with the understanding that you already know how to do basic programming/scripting.

Retrobook

I got this book for my apprenticeship. It has a lot of old school tips and tricks for a beginning student and from my earlier training this book was still used by some journeymen/women. The more recent editions involve new retrofitting and ecofriendly demo. This 3rd edition still uses most of the same methods found in the new books. I wasn't disappointed.

Book condition: Fair, used, suffered water damage on my end. Hard cover bound, �1997 (in my opinion this book has "journeyed" out, which makes it experienced)

Readability: Intermediate, simple, and very detailed. Has diagrams, tables, glossary, index, unit sections, pictures, etc.

Level: Carpenter Apprentice or refresher

If u have not seen the newer Koel books, i suggest researching that first by comparing the two. After all, this is your knowledge on the line.

The definitive text...

This book is generally considered to be the best and most comprehensive carpentry textbook. It's a must for the professional and highly recommended if you're a do-it-yourselfer. I know it's expensive but, because it touches on all aspects of the "master craft," it will save you from buying a specialty book (concrete, finish, framing, etc.) every time you go to the home improvement store. This is also the text that is used by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters to train all of its apprentices.

Excellent book for workers and homeowners.

This was one of my textbooks while studying construction in college. In truth, I loathe that I sold this thing back...buy it and hang onto it, as I have yet to see another book on carpentry that covered as much ground as this one did. This is an "easy read" too, with ample pictures and diagrams. The version/edition of this textbook I used came with an interactive CD for computer use, the CD was pretty worthless and just was a carbon copy of what was in the book already in print form, but it's there if you need it I geuss.
