Dance And Dancers In The Victorian And Edwardian Music Hall Ballet (Music in Nineteenth Century Britain) (Music in Nineteenth Century Brita

The Victorian and Edwardian music hall ballet has been a neglected facet of dance historiography, falling prey principally to the misguided assumption that any ballet not performed at the Opera House or 'legitimate' theatre necessarily meant it was of low cultural and artistic merit. Here Alexandra Carter identifies the traditional marginalization of the working class female participants in ballet historiography, and moves on to reinstate the 'lost' period of the music hall ballet and to apply a critical account of that period. Carter examines the working conditions of the dancers, the identities and professional lives of the ballet girls and the ways in which the ballet of the music hall embodied the sexual psyche of the period, particularly in its representations of the ballet girl and the ballerina. By drawing on newspapers, journals, theatre programmes, contemporary fiction, poetry and autobiography, Carter firmly locates the period in its social, economic and artistic context. The book culminates in the argument that there are direct links between the music hall ballet and what has been termed the 'birth' of British ballet in the 1930s; a link so long ignored by dance historians. This work will appeal not only to those interested in nineteenth century studies, but also to those working in the fields of dance studies, gender studies, cultural studies and the performing arts.

A Rude History of Napoleonic Era Europe
By S Wood
It's hard to imagine a popular publisher commission a twelve part history of Europe from the Reformation to World War 2 for the general reader these days, but in the 1960s that is what Fontana publishing did with their history of Europe. George Rude's contribution covers the period from 1783-1815 under the title "Revolutionary Europe" and in a readable prose explicates for the general reader the history of Europe during the turmoil and upheavals of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era.

The period itself is broken down into four parts, firstly the scene is set with an account of Europe in the early 1780's that considers the state of European developments at that time and the conflicts within as well as between Nations. The largest section of the book covers the French revolution itself and the variety of twists and turns it took prior to the rise of Napoleon. This is followed by an account of the myriad of effects that the revolutionary ideology had across Europe, and the Wars that were fought across the continent. Part of the revolutionary ideology was the recognition of talent without regard to status, so in effect you didn't have to be a member of the nobility/aristocracy to rise high in the service of the State. One such talented individual was Napoleon, and the fourth part of the book looks at his rise to power in the army, in France and across Europe as well as his eventual fall, resurrection and eventual exile to St Helena a sort of early 19th Century Guantanemo Bay for one.

Rude is pretty even handed throughout, and though he freely gives his opinion he also allows room for other views of the events of those decades. It's a good few years old, initially published in 1962, but stands up well against other books I have read on this period. There is a newer edition from Blackwell as well as this older Fontana edition but I have no idea whether it is the same text with a new introduction, or whether the body of the text has been updated to take into account new research and interpretations of the era. As the new edition was published 7 years after the death of Rude I suspect the former. Besides that the original paperback can be picked up cheaply second hand here while the Blackwell edition is somewhat more pricey. Recommended reading.

A Forty-Four Pound Airborne History of Revolutionary Europe
By Donald P. Reed
Revolutionary Europe, 1783-1815, George Rude*; Harper & Row (1963 hardcover)

A forty-four pound cat was once lost & then found wandering around in the woods of New Jersey. "Chunk" became both an instant tabloid celebrity & a timely inspiration to this writer, previously at a loss as to how to create a metaphorical image of Mr. Rude's endless sentences & paragraphs.

A four-word sentence on page 264 provided some relief.

Only by being incarcerated for 12 hours during two continental flights to & from California was it possible to be able to get past the first 200 pages of this suitable-for-wallpaper tripe. In the home stretch, Chapters XI ("Revolutionary War") on out to the finale ("Perspectives") were relatively succinct & a welcome improvement. But how many readers in the past 45 years gave up before ever reading them?

Two or three more of these & I might be reading novels again.

Retained for its useful glossary of French & English words & terms & slogans of the Revolutionary & Napoleonic France era; its conscientious & systematic inclusion of historical dates; & for its extensive bibliography... which could have been printed in a normal size type - rendering them clearly legible - if Rude's academic bombfog (i.e., "as we have seen in previous chapters"**) - had been eliminated by an able editor intent upon producing a readable history.

Two-&-a-half stars for the reasons that it was retained & a half-star was added out of respect for Dr. John Kreis, who spoke respectfully of the book as a source reliable enough to be used to resolve a question about the function of the French parlement prior to the guillotine emerging as the final word in French legal circles during the revolution.

*There is an accent - either acute or grave - over the "e" in the author's last name. Given his verbosity, the letter should be engraved with both.

**If you have to interrupt the narrative with academic yammering in order to remind readers of what you stated in previous chapters, you're obviously not making a good first impression.

A Captivating and Utterly Thrilling YA Mystery Novel!
By Stephanie Ward
4.5 Stars

'Dead Girls Don't Lie' is a captivating and thrilling young adult mystery novel that will have you eagerly turning the pages for more. The story is told by Jaycee, a teenage girl who's best friend, Rachel, has just been murdered. Things like that didn't happen in their small town of Lake Ridge. Although Rachel had been acting strange and they had a falling out a few months before her death, Jaycee is taking her friend's murder incredibly hard. She vows to herself and to Rachel that she'll find out what happened that night. Little does she know that looks can be deceiving, and the worst danger out there might be right in your own town.

I absolutely love thrillers and this novel did not leave me disappointed. The plot was written in a complex way that intertwined several smaller story lines, laced with questions and no answers. It was a complete enigma for me to unravel, unlike most other novels of the genre. Usually I like to figure out what really happened before the characters do, but I was taken completely by surprise with this one. The entire story had me guessing and just when I thought I had a piece of the puzzle in place - the author only shifted gears and proved me wrong. I loved that I couldn't solve the mystery until the end of the book along with the characters - the thrill of the chase and putting the pieces together was one of the things I loved the most about this novel. The characters were well written as well, especially that of Jaycee - our heroine. We get to see the entirety of her character - her strengths, flaws, intelligence, love for her friends, and her overwhelming guilt. Although she's broken and blames herself for not saving Rachel that night, Jaycee promises to find out who killed Rachel and why. The other characters in the novel were rounded as well, even the sideline characters and the memories of Rachel that Jaycee had were detailed. As I mentioned earlier, the writing was exceptional and the book had a naturally urgent pace that kept me eagerly devouring each page in the attempt to figure out what was really going on. There are tons of twists and turns that the reader won't see coming, which I think definitely adds to the appeal of the book. The entirety of the book - descriptions, settings, characters, occurrences - were so well detailed and vivid that I felt like I was right beside Jaycee as it was all happening. Needless to say, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by this author in the future. Very highly recommended for fans of mysteries and thrillers!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Couldn't put it down!
By SE Falter
I loved how captivating the story was and how quickly I couldn't put it down. It was so unpredictable and I really appreciate that! I also liked how she tied in a different culture and addressed issues of discrimination. I think every YA could benefit from those lessons in the book, even though they were subtle.

One thing I appreciate as a parent is being able to recommend the book to my children knowing that there isn't inappropriate romance scenes. She tastefully handles the romance in the book.

The end was surprising and tender. I loved the last chapter!

Dead Girls Don't Lie
By Hannah @ Paperback Treasures
Dead Girls Don't Lie is one of those books where I can't really think of anything to say other than, "Ehh. It was okay." I guess I enjoyed reading it, but I wouldn't be sad to have missed out on it. The premise sounded promising, and I don't have any huge complaints, but there also wasn't anything that would make me really love this story.

I know a lot of people complained about the main character, saying she was too nave, but that didn't really bother me because it's realistic: the story acknowledges that she's nave, and I know we'd all like to think we'd be smarter in a situation like this, but I'm pretty sure I'd be oblivious too, so I can't really fault Jaycee for that. But while that didn't really bother me, I wasn't a huge fan of Jaycee, either; not because there's anything wrong with her, but because she's just kind of boring. She's the stereotypical good girl that does no wrong and goes to church every week (the religion aspect was a bit much for me, too). She was okay, but I just wish there had been something more to her.

The mystery was pretty good, but for some reason, I didn't get as into it as I usually do with murder mysteries. I think part of that is because Jaycee doesn't actually find out anything at all; she's really not much of a detective. Things just kind of happen to her, and people tell her what happened. While there is definitely an element of danger, it didn't feel as real as in mysteries where the main character was actually actively figuring things out.

I still don't know how to feel about the solution. I had kind of already figured it out early on, but then I thought that would be too obvious... but it did turn out to be true. I thought the revelation wasn't a hundred percent in accordance to the way the person who did it was acting throughout the novel, even if it is explained at the end. The solution is also kind of drawn out: we find out who did it, but then it takes a whiiile for Jaycee to really understand what happened and for anything to be resolved, and the final action scene seemed kind of staged. I think this ending was an interesting solution, but the psychology behind it was too complex and not actually explored enough for this to work.

In the beginning of the novel, the story tries really hard to be about race. I think this was a good attempt, but it wasn't done thoroughly enough, and the way Jennifer Shaw Wolf went about it just made me feel kind of icky. The novel is set in a small, white town that has some Mexican immigrants, and there's a lot of racism towards these "outsiders." So of course, when Rachel gets murdered, everyone assumes it was one of those Mexican gangbangers, and Jaycee tries to relieve some of those racial tensions. But as much as it's trying to criticize the Mexican gangbanger stereotype, the story doesn't really do all that much to disprove it: honestly, the portrayal of the Mexican characters is pretty stereotypical, along with the bad Spanglish dialogue that was so obviously written by a white person. It also made me feel really weird how Jaycee is supposed to be the one "good" white person, as if she should get brownie points for crossing to the other side of the river and talking to the Mexicans. The whole topic just kind of goes away towards the end, without any more exploration. Really, it was a nice try, but it just doesn't go in-depth enough to really do anything.

That's basically all I have to say about Dead Girls Don't Lie; it's an okay novel all around. If the story sounds interesting to you, go for it - there's nothing horribly bad about it. But there was also nothing that would make me really love it. All in all, it was just a very underwhelming read.

Julian (Routledge Revivals): An Intellectual Biography, by Polymnia Athanassiadi

Julian: An Intellectual Biography, first published in 1981, presents a penetrating and scholarly analysis of Julian’s intellectual development against the background of philosophy and religion in the late Roman Empire.

Professor Polymnia Athanassiadi tells the story of Julian’s transformation from a reclusive and scholarly adolescent into a capable general and an audacious social reformer. However, his character was fraught with a great many contradictions, tensions and inconsistencies: he could be sensitive and intelligent, but also uncontrollably spontaneous and subject to alternating fits of considerable self-pity and self-delusion.

Athanassiadi traces the Emperor Julian’s responses to personal and public challenges, and dwells on the conflicts that each weighty choice imposed on him. This analysis of Julian’s character and of all the issues that confronted him as an emperor, intellectual and mystic is based largely on contemporary evidence, with particular emphasis on the extensive writings of the man himself.

An excellent guide
By Sundance Wilson
Finally!! It's nice to see a book that isn't just for future directors, actors, and screenwriters...

This book is informative, easy to read, and invaluable for anyone interested in what a 1st Assistant Director does. HOWEVER! This book doesn't just limit itself to the 1st AD position. Not only is there an amazing amount of information about the day-to-day job, she lets you know who you'll be working with (departments), some general challenges you will face, the equipment you'll use/encounter, and the skills you will need to succeed in the industry.

Although I already felt knowledgeable about the industry, Liz gave me insight that I am most grateful to have as I begin my journey into the world of film. I'd say this is one of the best books I have read about the logistical workings of the industry.

I hope you like this book as much as I do. I'm more excited than ever to get started and I'll definitely be reading it again.

Also, the companion website (!) has a lot of valuable information to supplement the book.

Just what I was looking for
By Good news
I stumbled into 1st ADing 3 years ago and I felt like I found one of my callings. However, I had a lot of gaps between my film school education in actually understanding what an AD really does. Without access to a DGA trained AD, this book helped to fill in some gaps in my learning. It doesn't answer everything but it is a great overview with helpful personal stories from the writer. The only thing that I wish it expanded upon was entry into the DGA and the role of Key Seconds or multiple 2nd AD's and how to schedule multi-camera shots. Otherwise it's a great place to either start or expand upon your knowledge of running a set.
