2 CDs were supposed to come with the book, but there were none.

I bought this book to learn Brazillian Portuguese for my girlfriend, and the book claims to include CDs (which did indeed get sold with the version she bought in a brick and mortar store in Brazil). This version however does not come with the CDs despite claiming to. While this book is apparently quite good, this Amazon listing of this book is bad and misleading. Considering the price tag, avoid it and purchase the book elsewhere.

I was indirectly asked by the authors to add a note to this review stating that they would like anyone who purchases the book from this Amazon listing to contact them through the book's website at muitoprazerlivro.com.br . Contacting will also allow them to send purchasers a link to download the 2 CDs of audio clips that should normally be included with legitimate editions of the book.

Excellent for learning

It's a great book to learn Brazilian Portuguese!! Every side has a good and easy layout the progression is fast enough a good book to study on your own! BUT the book I ordered from Amazon supposed to have 2 CD's which were not in the Book!!!!!! You should tell the people that you are not sending the CD's so they know and the price should then be different too, because this is the price for the book inclusive two CD's!!

Great textbook that covers EVERYTHING you need to know from the very basics through to subjunctive tense, slang, and beyond. I tried other beginner portuguese books but found that they were only useful up to an extent. I definitely recommend with this book with a portuguese/english dictionary on hand, since this book is fully in Portuguese, instructions and all. I loved the total immersion aspect but I can see how it could be intimidating for some people. Boa sorte!

Prizewinning University of Washington historian White's "organic machine" is the Columbia River and its tributaries: along this energy powerhouse, Native American fishermen and eastern adventurers, spawning salmon and man-made machines--from gill nets and fish wheels to hydroelectric dams and Hanford Engineer Works--came together to forge "a new energy regime, a new geography, and a new relationship between human labor and the energy of nature." Viewing human history and natural history as part of the same narrative, not as parallel stories, White argues "it is our work that ultimately links us, for better or worse, to nature." The Organic Machine focuses on that linkage to illuminate both the conflicting human claims and constructions that have "disassembled" the mighty river over the decades and the "larger organic cycles beyond [human] control" to which the river system remains tied. White urges that it is this mixture of organic and human-made that defines both the river's history and its current reality. An interesting essay on the impact of our industrial civilization in the American west. White uses the history of the Columbia River basin as a paradigmatic example of large scale engineering of the natural world. White opens by pointing out that human interactions with the Columbia basin are ancient; Native Americans exploited the resources of the Columbia for millenia. The lower Columbia valley was relativel densely populated due in large part to he enormous bounty of Salmonid migrations up the Columbia. While White is no starry eyed romantic, the impression he leaves is that this traditional pre-industrial economy existed in a kind of equilibrium with the Columbia. The coming of Europeans and European descended Americans brought about great social and biologic changes. The enormous disease related mortality associated with European contact and the commodification of food supplies devastated Native American populations and societies. Into this partial vacuum came Americans who were increasingly involved in a global and commodity oriented economy.

Industrial technology made possible the reorganization of the Columbia basin. White concisely shows the convergence of interests that drove this impressively large effort. Corporate interests, local boosterism, Progressive ideology-politics, and Depression era job creation all drove the amazing efforts of the Bonneville Power Administration and other agencies that remade the Columbia basin. This is very much the story of unintended consequences. Many advocates of these projects saw them as vehicles for political reform and social transformation - goals that were never really met. White connects these efforts to interesting and distinctly American figures such as Emerson and the 20th century social theorist Lewis Mumford.

The ultimate result is what White terms The Organic Machine; the transformation of the Columbia Basin into a living analogue of a piece of machinery. This is not a moralistic book. White is primarily concerned with describing this phenomenon and understanding its genesis. While he primarily describes many of the unsatisfactory aspects of the outcome, he is also quite clear on some of the considerable benefits of this remarkable project. This is very much the story of human activity as a virtually geologic force; producing a powerfully concrete and very different analogue of the natural world.

There is an unsatisfactory aspect to this book. It is really a fairly long essay and falls somewhat between 2 stools. Intended partially as a somewhat philosophical essay, its a bit too long and White could have made the essential points in a shorter text. At the same time,m White's historical perspective is quite interesting but it doesn't provide the breadth of historical detail you'd expect from a more strictly historical work.

Brief and Brilliant

The Organic Machine is an ideal example of what great scholarship should produce. It's a short, beautifully written, passionate history of what we human beings have made of the Columbia River in the time since white people came to the Northwest. It is driven by an environmentalism founded on the understanding that man is not separate from nature and never can be. The protagonist of this book is the salmon -- a creature to whom we have done no favors by transforming the Columbia -- yet man is not the villain of the piece. This book is written, as White says, "to understand rather than denounce." The profound depth of White's scholarship is made clear in the bibliographic essay that follows the text; the text itself makes use of massive learning in a graceful and accessible style. Anyone who cares about our relationship with the natural world, and who wants to think about it with some subtlety and historical grounding, should read this book. They don't come any better.

Great for review

Great for review! Used it in conjunction with an online training system and it helped tremendously to compartmentalize what seemed to be an abundance of info to digest in a much easier fashion. In my opinion should not be seen as a book that will get you past the certification test alone, but definitively another weapon in the arsenal.

Nice overview of topics and concepts. I took a few sample exams and have to admit that most topics I have failed were covered somehow on the book, but some weren't. Good deal for the price and nice refresher if you already too Six Sigma seminars.

About the Author
Dr. James H. Thorp has been a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS, USA) and a Senior Scientist in the Kansas Biological Survey since 2001. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Prof. Thorp was a Distinguished Professor and Dean at Clarkson University, Department Chair and Professor at the University of Louisville, Associate Professor and Director of the Calder Ecology Center of Fordham University, Visiting Associate Professor at Cornell, and Research Ecologist at the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. He received his Baccalaureate from the University of Kansas (KU) and both Masters and Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State. Those degrees focused on zoology, ecology, and marine biology, with an emphasis on the ecology of freshwater and marine invertebrates. Dr. Thorp is currently on the editorial board of two journals (River Research and Applications and River Systems) and is a former President of the International Society for River Science. He teaches freshwater, marine, and general ecological courses at KU, and his Masters and doctoral graduate students work on various aspects of the ecology of organisms, communities, and ecosystems in rivers, reservoirs, and wetlands. Prof. Thorp’s research interests and background are highly diverse and span the gamut from organismal biology to community, ecosystem, and macrosystem ecology. He works on both fundamental and applied research topics using descriptive, experimental, and modeling approaches in the field and lab. While his research emphasizes aquatic invertebrates, he also studies fish ecology, especially as related to food webs. He has published more than one hundred refereed journal articles, books, and chapters, including three single-volume editions of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp and A.P. Covich) and the first volume (Ecology and General Biology) in the current fourth edition.

Dr. D. Christopher Rogers is a research zoologist at the University of Kansas with the Kansas Biological Survey and is affiliated with the Biodiversity Institute. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of New England in Armidale, NSW, Australia. Christopher specializes in freshwater crustaceans (particularly the Branchiopoda and the Decapoda) and the invertebrate fauna of seasonally astatic wetlands on a global scale. He has numerous peer reviewed publications in crustacean taxonomy and invertebrate ecology, as well as published popular and scientific field guides and identification manuals to freshwater invertebrates. Christopher is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Crustacean Biology and a founding member of the Southwest Association of Freshwater Invertebrate Taxonomists. He has been involved in aquatic invertebrate conservation efforts all over the world.

Lisa is Truely a Generation's Specialist!

I just loved Lisa's Orrell's book, The Millennials INTO Leadership. She really gets what these younger generations are thinking and feeling, and where they are coming from. And she knows where they want to go. She offers great insight for any young person that has ambition for being an effective young leader in the world and in the workplace. And, she knows how to tell them what they need to know to reach their potential and achieve success. For myself, I am a Baby Boomer, and I gleaned great insight for better understanding this young generation, so I can better relate and work with them. I have just written my first sales training book, Just Treat Me Like I Matter: The Heart of Sales. And it is full of information about "what make people tick," especially in the sales arena. About the Author
George Hart is a staff lecturer in the Education Service of the British Museum and teaches ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs for the University of London. He has written a number of books on ancient Egypt.

Falls between two stools

Hart tries to cover the major points of Egyptian mythology in a fairly sophisticated way. For instance, he describes the sources for most of the myths or mythic episodes he discusses, rather than assembling disparate sources into a single story, as many of the simplest retellings of Egyptian myths do. But he's constrained by the format of the Legendary Past series, in which each book is only 80 pages long. There's a limit to how much he can analyze the significance of each myth when there's so much to cover and so little space. It doesn't help that a lot of the space is taken up by his descriptions of the source material (and, weirdly, quotations from T. S. Eliot). The book therefore summarizes episodes of mythology more than it retells them, so it's not very engaging reading, but it only patchily describes the symbolic meanings behind myths and how they related to Egyptian society and customs. It falls between two stools, not succeeding as storytelling or as analysis.

The first two chapters treat the creation myths and the myth of Osiris' death and Horus and Seth's struggle for the throne. Two much shorter chapters cover stories about Isis and the Destruction of Mankind by the Eye of Ra. The next chapter is about Ra's journey through the underworld, based on the Amduat, Book of Caverns, and Book of Gates. The last two chapters are on historical Egyptian figures who became the subjects of legend after their deaths, and some of the fantastical short stories in Egyptian literature.

If you want a more substantial book that covers ancient Egyptian legends and fantastical works of fiction as well as mythology, Joyce Tyldesley's Myths and Legends of Ancient Egypt is far more extensive.

Lovely Afternoon Study

I've read this book twice. It's easy to do, as it's only 80 pages. I'll surely read it again down the road since I am classically homeschooling my child and repeat our school topics every four years. George Hart's book is definitely a scholarly one, so yeah, it's a bit dry, but if you're in the mood for scholarly writing, it's pretty great - he even has a few snarky comments here and there if you look for them. It's an afternoon study-date. Filled with mostly the stories of Isis and crew and gives you the back drop by which all the Egyptian lore stems, complete with archaeological tidbits and which museum had what at the time of the publication. Worth picking up for cheap and keeping in your collection, in my opinion. (I purchased my copy at Half Price Books years ago.)

an excellent introduction to the subject of mythology

Written by one of the most prominent and eminent Egyptologists of the modern era, this book covers, amongst others, creation myths and relates in vivid and colourful detail the myths of Horus and Seth, Isis and Osiris, together with the ever-popular myth of kingship, the myth of cataclysm, and Isis and the scorpions. The book examines closely renowned Ancient Egyptian books, such as The Book of Am-Duat, the Book of Caverns, and The Book of Gates, with the express aim of providing the visual and textual backdrop to the myths. Imhotep, the architect of the Third Dynasty pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, features prominently in the mythology of ancient Egypt. Hart captures eloquently the life and history of Imhotep, as well as the construction and perpetuation of his divinity status in later times. These historical and mythological perspectives make, along with amusing stories such as *The Shipwrecked Sailor* and *The Tale of Two Brothers*, for absorbing and informative reading.

Marilyn Cruise has done it again in her sequel White Chapel. I absolutely adored this novel and found myself turning the pages eagerly wanting more. I cannot wait for her the last book in the series to be released! Cruise effectively continues the story of a stripper and a billionaire who wishes to marry her for an inheritance. This novel is crazy passionate and had me not knowing my feelings toward the two as a couple. My opinions were changing and developing with every turn in the story. There is only three things you need to accomplish tonight: read this novel, indulge in the seductive world Cruise has created, and dream of a handsome billionaire.

I can't get enough of this book that had me crying and laughing all the way to ordering the 3rd book, my advise get all three at once. This book continues with Michael and Scarletts plan to decieve his mother Diane, who is as vicious as she is sweet. She definitely sees right threw both of then up to and including her final message to Scarlett. When Michael finally realizes he truly loves her, will it be too late, has all the lies and mistrust really the end? This book will capture your heart so you can't help but go onto book three.
