Fabulous book for Fashion Designers!

My degree is in Fashion Design and I have been working as an Assistant Designer for about a year. Unfortunately, I had a less than mediocre sketching teacher when I was in college and have been looking for books that will help me work on my own croqui's and I absolutely LOVE this book. It is much bigger than I expected. You really get your money worth! I read one review where someone was complaining about the nudity. If you are studying figure drawing, get used to it and get over it. It's not pornographic and it's the only way to understand the body. Another few said that the figures were super womanish which is a little true but it is super easy to make small alterations to the forms if you just want to use the ones in the book. I recommend this and Contemporary Fashion Illustration Techniques by Naoki Watanabe if you are on a budget. If not, go for 9 Heads: A Guide to Drawing Fashion (3rd Edition) too - great book I have not yet been able to purchase!

absolutely thrilled with this book! I think that any designer or person looking for a how-to drawing book is probably looking for something with fewer words and more examples; this book does just that. So many great examples of a drawings from start to finish, with a few guidelines to help along the way. It gets down to the details in facial expression and features; it even shows how to adequately draw flats!

It's been years since I have drawn a fashion sketch, but I am looking forward to getting back into it with this book as a very helpful guide.

Lots of pictures, not enough instruction

I just got the book in the mail and flipped through all of the pages. I saw a lot pictures, but not a lot of detailed instructions. I know how to draw basic figures, and was looking to advance my skills. This book is more for the beginner who does not know how to draw at all. It's a good book for the beginner, but not for someone who wants to go to the next level and advance their skills. This was second book that I have bought from Amazon that was just ok, but got great reviews. I will just wait on my upcoming Fashion Illustration class in Fashion Design school for some more detailed, higher level instruction.

Clear explanation of a complex subject

David Twicken's Eight Extraordinary Channels is a superb text for acupuncturists, meditators and qigong practitioners who want to better understand and practically explore this complex subject. I've known David for 15 years since he was my professor in acupuncture college and have always enjoyed his exceptional talent for communicating complex ideas without over simplification. This book is valuable for beginners who are looking for a cogent introduction and experienced people looking to layer their knowledge with new perspectives. There is also a companion CEU course for professional acupuncturists.

Practical and worthy of consideration

Practical and worthy of consideration in 8-extraordinary study. Not a "heady" book like some on this subject, just a user friendly break down on topic. There were chapters that seemed appropriate for another topic, perhaps another book, but then again inner mediation may be inseparable from the study of the Eight Extraordinary. In this book you have the opportunity to treat inwardly through meditation practices as well as point treatments on the surface. A bonus to some readers, would think.............

Good but shallow intro

I've done extensive usage of this book lately together with Sears and Zemansky's "University Physics". So it has been natural to me to compare the books while using them day by day.
The result has been quite disappointing for me, regarding Halliday's book.
The book is very clear and well illustrated, and can be successfully used as an easy intro to the subject. It is also complete since you'll find all of the classical and modern Physics topics.
But ... but unfortunately in this case easy has meant shallow to me, since it often happened that for a given topic, concepts were given "as they were", with no explanation of the why or how scientists arrived to a given formulation or result. Take the case of Simple Harmonic Motion: x = Acos(wt+f). Although this formula presents no difficulties to me, I wonder where it does come from, how we (humans) first arrived to this conclusion. I had to read Sears and Zemansky to learn that the experiment that lead to this kind of formula includes a simple form of phasors.
The approaches sounds quite different to me: Halliday says "Take it for granted, be faithful", Sears and Zemansky say "This is the proper kind of formula, and you can see why by yourself if you do ...".
This is important to me, since I use to block myself on a concept until I fully understand it.
Another drawback of this book is the quantity of problems at the end of the chapter. In my humble opinion, an average of 65-70 problems are too few (considering you have the solutions of only half of them, i.e. the odd numbered ones).
So, this is my conclusion: easy and complete introduction to Physics, but too shallow to be really useful in a university course.

The classic......(I used it as a T.A. and as a student)

I am a graduate student in physics and I have been a teaching assistant for 3 years now at Iowa State Univesity and SUNY Stony Brook. I have taught introductory physics numerous times and I have teaching experience with this book: IT IS GREAT. It is everything that the students ever dreamed of. Every chapter has really easy to follow explanation of the fundamental theory and numerous step-by-step solved problems and examples. It also has nice boxes with general strategies for solving problems. At the end of every chapter there is an extensive collection of exercises that fit well with the material of the book.
An advice for the students: Dont start doing your homework before you understand the material. I have seen it numerous times, students that have not understood what is really going on, trying to solve the problems. Big mistake. Open the Halliday-Ressnick book, study the material first and then solve the problems. There is a general fear among the students to go through the theory of the book (any book) first and spend some quality time trying to absorb it. They just think that physics is too difficult of a subject and that they wont understand a thing. For that reason they just use their collection of formulae and blindly try to apply it in order to solve the problems.
I believe that Halliday-Resnick breaks this barrier, their treatment of the subject shows how much they care for the student and they do their best to explain things in the easiest possible way.Something that really breaks the ice is a photograph at the beginning of each chapter that shows an everyday phenomenon that will be treated in the course of that particular chapter, like the picture showin a young girl up in the mountain, with her hair floating up in the air! (a dangerous situation as explained in the book), or the explosion of the Hinderburg and also the picture of a man inside a car that is being hit by a lightning without harming the man inside!
As an undergraduate in physics I used this book too for my introductory physics courses so I also have read it from the student point of view. I believe that it does a superb job clarifyng the fundamental principles of physics without difficult or "intellectual-kind" of explanations. It goes step by step building up until you understand it. I also used this book extensively to prepare for the Physics subject GRE test and it helped a lot. I still keep it in my office and frequently look for things that I have forgotten. I totaly recommend it.
As for the mathematical prerequisites of the book that a previous reviewer has commented on I would say that you need to how to solve simple integrals (nothing more dramatic than a polyonym or a trigonometric function or 1/r and 1/r^2) and also it would be nice to know the meaning of a derivative as the rate of change of a function with respect to some variable. Nothing more. Enjoy!
P.S.1 I am familiar with the 4th and 5th edition. P.S.2 There exists a solution manual for the book. Very helpful.

Best For First-Time Physcists

Halliday certainly does an excellent at making the student understand the basic and essential concepts of physics. His text is by far the most simple and best arranged compared to other authors such as Serway, and keeps the student motivated to learn further.

I first opened this book at the beginning of last summer, having known absolutely nothing at all about Physics. Using this book as my sole resource, I self-studied for the AP Physics C exam and often used this book in lieu of my school's Physics B text for its simplicity and ease of understanding. The 5's on all three of my exams were in no doubt attributed to Halliday's great ability to teach the material.

However, I will admit that the problems that are presented in this book are short of the perfection reached in Halliday's ability to teach physics. There are an ample amount of problems per unit, about 100 per chapter, which is by far plenty. However, the majority of the problems are too hard to solve given the examples in the book and definitely require further studying and experience with physics problem.

On the otherhand, the main reason I chose this book over others is because of its availability of Instructors Solutions Manual, which has every single problem solved in the text. The manual can easily be found on the internet through google, which saves you from the trouble of only being able to solve odd problems and a often lame student's solutions manual.

STL is a hugely powerful feature of today's C++, but one with a well-earned reputation for complexity. The book is organized into 50 tips that explore different areas of the STL. Besides providing a list of dos and don'ts, Meyers presents a lot of background on what works and what doesn't with STL. Each tip is demonstrated with in-depth coding samples, many of which make use of two-color printing to highlight the most important lines of code. Scott Does It Again

There we go - with his well-known sharpness and diligence, Scott absorbed STL in all detail, taught it in seminars, chewed on the ensuing experience, and distilled it all in this book.
I was one of the reviewers and in the beginning I thought that reviewing a book on STL is going to be an easy enough task. I was wrong.
I learned lots of new things on using STL effectively: why `empty()` is better than `size() == 0`, when and how to write custom allocators, how std::string might be implemented, how associative containers distinguish between equality and equivalence, how to implement associative containers as sorted vectors (that's a gem!), and many, many other things that I either had a blurry understanding of, or simply didn't know about. Now I'm glad I do, because my understanding of the STL and the practical use of it are much better.
The book went through an extensive review process; it is really combed and distilled to its finest. I recommend it to any C++ programmer who uses STL - which should be, any C++ programmer, period. Five well deserved stars.

improved my code immediately

I'm a professional software engineer. I write code all day long and have lots of experience with C++, but I hadn't used STL much until recently. If you're in a similar situation--decent C++ knowledge but not an STL expert--this book is for you. I haven't even read the whole thing yet, and already I am using patterns from the book to write more effective code.

Before I started this book, I thought STL was kind of neat. It had some useful containers. It was nice to be able to use a list or map or string class that had already been tested.

Boy, was I underestimating the power of STL. This book has made me a big STL fan, but I'm not reviewing the STL now so I'll leave that topic alone... Thanks to Scott Meyers, I have a much better grasp of the capabilities and limitations of STL. I can use it to do a lot more. I write more concise code that's easier to read and debug. I make better choices about which containers to use. I recognize situations where I can use an STL algorithm instead of many lines of my own code.

In short, I look at the STL code I wrote before and laugh... I mean, it all works, but the Meyers book has taken my use of (and appreciation for) the STL to a whole new level. I recommend this book for any C++ developer who isn't already an STL expert.

An update, 2 years after the above text was written: I still recommend this book to people and still think it's the best STL book I've read.

Awesome!

This is a truly useful book. It explains lots of little "gotchas" that I didn't know about previously, and Scott does his usual excellent job at explaining *why* it's important to do things a certain way (and no other). One part that I found particularly interesting is about the futility of writing container-independent code; not only does that section show why this is a bad idea, it also serves as a splendid illustration of the idiosyncracies of the various containers. The chapter on iterators is priceless, as are the tips about writing comprehensible code and debugging.
The presentation is very much up-to-date (even to the point where it anticipates some of the forthcoming updates to the C++ standard). The writing style is clear and precise without sounding academic or condescending, and the book has an index that actually works.
"Effective STL" is every bit as good as "Effective C++" and "More Effective C++". No C++ programmer should still be writing code without the STL, and no-one writing code with the STL should be without this book. Buy it!
