Terry Pratchett has a seemingly endless capacity for generating inventively comic novels about the Discworld and its inhabitants, but there is in the hearts of most of his admirers a particular place for those novels that feature the hard-bitten captain of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, Samuel Vimes. Sent as ambassador to the Northern principality of Uberwald where they mine gold, iron, and fat--but never silver--he is caught up in an uneasy truce between dwarfs, werewolves, and vampires in the theft of the Scone of Stone (a particularly important piece of dwarf bread) and in the old werewolf custom of giving humans a short start in the hunt and then cheating.

Pratchett is always at his best when the comedy is combined with a real sense of jeopardy that even favorite characters might be hurt if there was a good joke in it. As always, the most unlikely things crop up as the subjects of gags--Chekhov, grand opera, the Caine Mutiny--and as always there are remorselessly funny gags about the inevitability of story:

They say that the fifth elephant came screaming and trumpeting through the atmosphere of the young world all those years ago and landed hard enough to split continents and raise mountains.

No one actually saw it land, which raised the interesting philosophical question: when millions of tons of angry elephant come spinning through the sky, and there is no one to hear it, does it--philosophically speaking--make a noise?

As for the dwarfs, whose legend it is, and who mine a lot deeper than other people, they say that there is a grain of truth in it.

YA-A book that's part mystery, part action-adventure, and all funny. Someone has stolen the original Scone of Stone from a dwarf vault in ?berwald and its replica. The new Low King of the dwarves cannot be crowned without it, and the current candidate for the throne is more moderate than certain factions would like. The fifth elephant of the title is the mythical beast responsible for providing the mountains of ?berwald with their rich deposits of gold, silver, iron and fat-the real reason that dwarven politics matter in Ankh-Morpork. While this is not the best story to begin an exploration of the "Discworld" (HarperCollins), fans of the series will enjoy it.

Vimes Does Eastwood

It turns out that Angua's brother isn't very nice, even for an undead. You know it is inevitable from the time you first meet him - doing one-handed handstand pushups - that Sir Samuel is on a collision course with one Bad Dog.
It's also true that while you can take Duke Vimes out of Ankh Morpork, you can't take the cop out of Sam Vimes, even by making him the ambassador to Uberwald. It's a little hard to relate the Sam Vimes of "Guards, Guards!" to the man here. Sam Vimes seems infected with Clint Eastwood, but the cynicism is still there.
More than any recent Terry Pratchett story, this one is a novel, with the comic bits fewer and the plot intensity ratcheted up to a new level. The Game isn't even slightly funny, and dwarves are much more complicated than the axe-swinging, quaffing half wits (sorry) we've seen in other books. There are amusing moments, but for the first time I think Terry has a plot carrying the story instead of gags strung together by a plot. If you compare it with the thin shards of a plot in "Color of Magic" and "Light Fantastic," you can see how far he has come.
I think some of the negative reviews - except for the accurate comments on the lamentably incompetent proofreading - are a result of his shift in focus.
This is a very good book. Not the funniest. Not the cleverest. But it's the closest thing there is likely to be to a "mainstream" Discworld (™) novel. I enjoyed it very much.
And when Sam Vimes heads to the plaza to confront Angua's brother, armed only with the leavings from the raided clacks tower, puffing on his cigar; well, you can practically see the dirty serape swirling in the wind.

Pratchett's comeback

I am a diehard Pratchett fan, but even I hesitated to fork over the money for the new Fifth Elephant. I had been disappointed by his last several offerings, even Carpe Jugulum, which everyone said was his comeback book. Recently, it seems that his books have suffered from a lack of all that made Moving Pictures and the books of its time the best in the series. And I'm a big fan of the Guards storyline, and the last Guards book had been Jingo (don't even talk to me about it). Then I read The Fifth Elephant. And I experienced true joy. This is a Pratchett book in the classic style- a darkish story with an impressive set of points to make (satirical and otherwise). At the same time, it is also the funniest one he's done in the last several years, full of humor from the extremely un-complex to the kind you have to stare at for a few moments to understand (and then then laugh hysterically.) I have in particular to mention the excellent characterization of such recurring characters as Vimes, Lady Sybil and Carrot. When you compare Elephant to their debut storyline, Guards! Guards!, you can see that they're all far more subtle now, and that all of them have grown very convincingly as well. Vimes is my favorite Pratchett character of all time, and in addition to other changes, has been mysteriously reborn as a man of action. I don't know why he's suddenly leaping tall buildings in a single bound like this, but... The person above is correct about the irritationg typesetting mistakes, and this day-glo cover probably could light up in the dark, but by all means buy this book and ignore both of 'em. It was easy for me.

Don't buy the hardcover

As the other reviews have said, this book is Terry at his near-best. It's funnier than the last couple I read (Jingo and Hogfather). I was afraid he'd gone into a decline, but now I know he hasn't. I think the members of the Watch are among his best, and it was thoroughly entertaining to watch the character development of Vimes, Cheery, Detritus, Colon, and Carrot as they are put into new situations. ..... HOWEVER, the state of the proofreading was APPALLING, to the point where I want to return the book. The typos and misplaced words were so frequent that they diminished my enjoyment of the story. If you care about value for your money, buy the paperback. I'm very resentful of having to shell out so much money for a hardcover book, only to see it so poorly put together. Grrrr! BAD Harper Collins!

McClelland is a revelation

My first knowledge of Ted McClelland came from his stellar book "Nothin' But Blue Skies," an investigation of the decline of the Rust Belt manufacturing base.

This book takes a fascinating turn as McClelland draws on his vast research and personal experience with the accents and language patterns that characterize the region. It is a delightful blend of history, linguistics, sociology, regionalism with copious amounts of humor sprinkled throughout.

Buy this book. Read it. Give it to a friend. I learned things from it that living in Flint, Mich. never revealed. Great stuff from a Michigander (a pejorative term coined by a young Illinois politician---F.I.P.?---named Abraham Lincoln, lobbed at Michigan's Lewis Cass).

A boatload of fun!

This book is a boatload of fun and erudite discussion of linguistics. Twp parts to the book are key: (a) an introduction to the distinctive qualities of three linguistic communities in the Midwest; (b) examples of words used in each state and some cities, to ground the discussion in concrete usage by people.

The three divisions of Midwest speech--North Central (located in the Dakotas and Minnesota, with a slim slice from Iowa; Inland North (ranging from New York west from Rochester through Buffalo, to Chicago--with parts of the following states: New York, a piece of northern Pennsylvania, a bit of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois with Chicago and surrounding counties); Midland (stretching from Nebraska, Kansas, a bit of Oklahoma, most of Misouri, most of Iowa, Illinois outside of the Chicago region, plus most of Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania).

The author discusses characteristics of each region, in terms of how words are pronounced. The change over time is also discussed. Some parts of a region's language disappeared with time as the older people died off and younger people going to college changed their way of speaking to blend in. This discussion is in itself fascinating. One problem that I found was the book's efforts to distinguish sounds. One example: a fronted o which makes "box" sound like "bahhx." I don't really know how to pronounce "bahhx." There are a number of examples like this. I did get others--such as the move of "cot" and "caught" coming together, lessening regional differences. One example that caught my mind "wash" sounding like "worsh." I recall as a kid being annoyed when people would speak of George Worshington. Well, now I know why it was said that way, given that people in some regions pronounced wash as worsh!

The second part is provides examples of words and phrases characteristic of different states and cities. Some quick examples:

Buffalonians refer to numbered roads, such as "the 190," rather than saying Route 90;

In Illinois, who says the name of Chicago which way? Chi-cah-go or Chi-caw-go or speaking of gym shoes rather than sneakers;

In Indiana, the sandwich referred to as a "Hoosier," although this book calls it a "ternderloin" (a slab of pork tenderloin pounded thinly and
then cooked and placed in a sandwich--so that the tenderloin extends well beyond the bun!);

Iowans refer to the Mississippi River as the East Coast and the Missouri River as the West Coast.

And so on! One reason that I enjoyed this book is that I am from central Illinois and recall hearing people speak in a way as to exemplify the book's examination--such as "worsh."

A lot of fun and an interesting analysis of language and its evolution over time.

Accents are the spice of life

I have enjoyed everything that Belt has published, and this title is one of my favorites. Like most Ohioans, I assumed I didn't have an accent. Not only does McClelland debunk this sentiment, he got me excited about my accent, which I learned is a Northern Cities.

This book truly has made life more enriching. I love spotting accents and local slang when out shopping or listening to the local radio. I have a better appreciation for how different regions of the Midwest relate and differ linguistically. This was a fun, easy read that I will continue to cite -- for a few dollars (or is it dowlars?), what a bargain!

The author tried to shed unbiased facts and analysis throughout.
If you want to have a deeper understanding of the basics of Islam and get rid of the misconception, you need to read this. I had to read this book as part of my coursework with Dr. Mandaville and his lectures were as great as the reading itself. Dont listen to the illiterate politicians and read good materials like this and you will have a proper understanding of the subject.

I purchased this book since it looked very comprehensive in its covering of the Pakistani energy scope. Yet once received, I quickly noticed that the book is nothing more than a conglomeration of facts that are publicly available- think CIA World Fact Book, etc.- which, by itself, would not be an issue. However, given that none of the footnotes and references are included in the book, a lot of the facts and figures might as well be made up. I tried calling and emailing the publisher, but the number is disconnected and the email has not been answered. I will not purchase a book from this publisher again.

About the Author
Dr. Alan C. Lacy currently serves as Director of the School of Kinesiology and
Recreation at Illinois State University. After teaching and coaching in the public
schools in Texas and Arizona, he earned his Ed.D. from Arizona State University in
1983. He served on the faculty at Texas Christian University for 14 years, assumed
the chair position in the Department of Physical Education at Indiana State
University in 1995, and moved to his current position in 1999. During his career, Dr.
Lacy has published more than 25 articles, made more than 40 presentations, and co-
authored Measurement and Evaluation in Physical Education and Exercise Science. He
is a fellow of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance of Health, Physical
Education, Recreation, and Dance.� �

Steamy and more

I was surprised by this book. As I started reading, I assumed it was just going to be another basic erotic romp through the pages.Yes, it is steamy but there is a lot more to it. There is a strong element of romance threaded through the novel and some great humor. Equally strong characters are found in both Paige and Mayson with both women showing different but equal strengths. The book sees them moving beyond their past history, with a plot that challenges them both to become more of who they want to be as individuals and together.

Very raunchy book. I'm sure some will like the non-sensical sex on a whim/fantasy theme and foul language. I prefer a true love story and a better variety of adjectives. This author's writing is just not for me.

Visions

VISIONS started off a bit rocky for me. The two main characters, Paige and Mayson, meet up at a masked sex party and jump into bed with each other within pages. Yes, I do know the summary promised that, but I didn’t expect it at the very start of the book!

But once I got further into VISIONS, the beginning made a lot of sense. Ever since Paige had that mindblowing sex at the masquerade, she’s been searching for more. But her search has been downright disappointing, and so she’s become a connoisseur of sex toys, even writing a review blog. Mayson has put her love life on the backburner, content to provide humanitarian relief for disaster stricken areas. When the two meet again — by coincidence and face to face — neither knows who the other is, and sparks fly. Paige can’t stand Mayson, but once Mayson figures out Paige is the one from the masquerade, she’s determined to win her over.

There’s a lot of steamy sex in VISIONS. It’s in the first chapter, and then throughout the book. There’s the Mayson/Paige friction/chemistry, which was fun to read, and also the Vinden/Paige adventures, wherein a masked mystery woman seduces Paige and gives her incredible orgasms. I hate to say it, but there was a bit too much sex for me in VISIONS. The different sex scenes were fun at first, but they got somewhat repetitive.

I thought VISIONS was pretty good. Perfect for the beach or an afternoon of escapism. Paige and Mayson were both strong women who knew what they wanted and were determined to get it. I did wonder why Paige was so focused on finding someone for great sex and great sex alone.

As a TR professional for many years, I realize there is no perfect horse, and that the many variables of each horse should all be a part of the puzzle. This very informative read helps us see the many pieces, and explains why and how they fit together. Lisa Wysocky has a great way of describing with words and uses a lot of real-life visuals that are truly useful. Examples and situations that people will encounter out in the field are hard to capture, but she does it with ease. She also doesn't assume readers already have common knowledge, yet moves through topics without boring more advanced readers. This book does a great job educating center staff who are looking for the right horse, as well as the rest of the horse community about what is important and why. Many people think their horse is “retiring” when entering the therapy world, because they think the physical work is less than in the competitive world. I've often heard, “Why would I donate my horse? He isn't lame or old enough to give away.” This book is the answer to that question. This is certainly a book that our center will have in our library and refer to often! About the Author
Lisa Wysocky is a Registered PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) instructor, mentor, and ESMHL who trains horses for equine assisted activities and therapies. She consults with PATH and other centers across the country about their horse herds, and oversaw the training of the rescue horse Valentino from a youngster who was barely halter trained to being chosen as the 2011 PATH International Equine of the Year. She is also the author of the multi award-winning Cat Enright horse mystery series.

this is an excellent read for anyone who is looking for a horse

While this seems geared to the therapeutic riding market, this is an excellent read for anyone who is looking for a horse. The 40+ photos illustrate the author's points very well, and she gives out a lot of red flags to look for when looking for a horse that I had never considered. Highly recommended for all horse lovers!
