Good instalment in the Kris Longknife series

It has been a long time since a new Kris Longnife book came out. This book series was one of the first I picked up when I restarted my book reading some years ago. It is a good book that fits well in the series and it is also a change of scenery from the last books. Going from fighting aliens on the edge of human space Kris has to stop a civil war in her former enemies, the Peterwalds, space.

This book is a mixture of action and diplomacy which is both quite well done. Even the diplomacy parts are quite action filled and there seems to be no end to the assassination attempts on Kris and her entourage. When diplomacy fails the big guns are brought out and this time it is Kris holding them. I quite liked the surprises this brought to the evil and half insane Empress. I also liked the newkindled relation between Kris and Vicky. I was less trilled by the unbelievable naivety and stupidity of the Emperor.

Plenty of the old characters are back although some of them are in fact leaving her service and returning back to Alwa. Kris also now has a newborn child which she drags along on her journey. I’m not sure that part was very well thought out. The thought of submitting a newborn child to a multi G environment seemed a bit insane to me.

I am also a bit scared of the path Kris took at the end of the book. It gave me the feeling that this was the last book in which we will see Kris in a active role or at least on the front lines. There seems to be a 15th book planned but it remains to see which direction the story takes.
Anyway, this was a quite enjoyable book and, as with the previous book, I enjoyed that Kris is actually in charge and not being pushed around once the mission starts (and that she holds the big guns of course).

Return to the good old days

This book hardens back to the origins of the series in many ways. The pace is brisk, the good guys are 'outnumbered' and the mission is impossible. I have missed this. It also acts as an excellent capper to her career as a naval officer.

The sole difficulty for me is the competence of the good guys. They end up being unbeatable in some respects. The lone fall down (kidnapping) was almost orchestrated to make the rest of the story flow logically.

This Fanboy Loves His Kris Longknife.

Longish series of sci-fi space opera books. Author says he his taking it in a new direction with the next book, so we have been witness to Kris working up the chain of command, saving her world, the universe and the known galaxy from bug eyed monsters.Its been an enjoyable if somewhat predictable ride. I am becoming very bored with unending series going into double digits. Yes, I know there is a fan base and, I am one of those fans but one gets the feeling that some of the books are written to hit a deadline, feed the fan base, get a check for the author. Please don't do that Mike Shepherd. You have already spun the story over to books with Vickie as the protagonist.

Conspiracy connoisseurs tired of contemplating whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone will feast on this tale of the 19th-century doings of the Knights of the Golden Circle. According to treasure hunter Brewer (aided by Bloomberg News editor-at-large Getler), who attempts to unravel their secrets in hopes of finding millions of dollars of hidden gold, the KGC was a sinister group of influential Southerners intent on engineering the secession of Southern states. They supposedly conspired to split the 1860 Democratic convention so that a weak candidate would emerge, guaranteeing Lincoln's election and support for secession-a deep game indeed. Losing the Civil War sent them underground, where, the authors say, political theorist and KGC member Jesse James, whose death they faked, led them to amass a fortune primarily through the pedestrian crimes of bank and stagecoach robbery and, more creatively, by collecting a multimillion-dollar award from Mexican Emperor Maximilian as repayment for aiding Maximilian's tottering regime. They hid their treasure, preserving knowledge of its whereabouts through a series of devilishly complex symbols known only to initiates for the day the South would rise again. Brewer believes some of his relatives were "sentinels" charged with protecting the KGC's hidden treasure. As fanciful as the group's history sounds (and the authors admit it is heavily based on circumstantial evidence), Brewer is convincing that the code existed and that he deciphered some of it, and his treasure hunting meets with modest success. Still, Brewer is convinced the Confederacy's hidden treasury is still out there waiting to be dug up; alas, he unwisely confided one location to a rogue who allegedly absconded with the multimillion-dollar rebel stash. Conspiracies abound

Is it true? Who knows. The real question is whether the book can keep my interest. At first it did a great job in laying out the story as the authors saw it. Unfortunately most of the last half of the book is spent trying to describe how he "located" the "treasure" spots. It also included maps which to my inexperienced eyes seem more of a stretch. I agree if there was a succession of Confederate treasure spots it would make sense that they all were laid out in similar patterns with markers. The question is whether you believe his explanation of markings. I have to admit it seems a bit of a stretch but who knows stranger things have happened I guess. The real problem is the book simply falls apart half way through whether true or not you no longer care.

An interesting read.

Is there really millions of dollars of Confederate treasure buried in strategically hidden spots across the Continental United States? Yes according to Bob Brewer, co-author of this book.

Shadow of the Sentinel follows Bob's quest to discover and uncover various hoardes of suposed Confederate treasure using his analytical skills, a few clues and a whole bunch of hearsay and supposition. Amazingly he seems to have 'cracked' the code and been on to something. However, we never really find out of he is as he's either stabbed in the back by his erstwhile partner(s) or is refusing to dig as he doesn't have the proper authorisation.
Bob Brewer is a smart fellow; he also seems to be a naive fellow, too. If you're confident that you've discovered buried treasure, be sure you really know somebody before you tell them.
The book gives a detailed history of the Knights of the Golden Circle whilst Bob's treasure hunt is interspersed with tales of the Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, The Civil War and beyond.
A book certainly worth reading even if the conclusion is inconclusive.

Since My Family and Other Animals is my favorite book of all time, this is just as fun. Watching this young child's interest in science and animals grow amidst his hysterically funny family dynamic is a great diversion for the times. There is another one to get later.

I am always excited when I hear of how God responds to the need of his kids. The testimonies of the many all speak to the love and faithfulness of our Creator and his absolute desire to be involved in all of our life not just our minds. I believe in praying for animals and seeing those prayers answered, but what this book did for me was open my eyes to a relational and spiritual application of an aspect of scripture I have never considered; ask for the crumbs from his table. When I first read that I was jolted and asked why only the crumbs? Between Janie and God's words I see an exciting dimension of provision and care that come out of a living relationship...even the dogs are fed and cared for!
