Greg L. Bahnsen (MDiv, ThM, Westminster Theological Seminary; PhD, University of Southern California) was Scholar-in-Residence at the Southern California Center for Christian Studies in Irvine. A distinguished scholar, author, and debater, he wrote and lectured extensively in the areas of apologetics and biblical law.

Absolutely Essential

Reading this book has been nothing less than 'epoch-making.' Dr. Van Til's writings are voluminous, spanning 3 feet on a book shelf when combined. Greg Bahnsen has done the church a great service by compiling, and systematically organizing some of Van Til's key writings into about 3 inches of shelf space (764 pp). The book is almost an anthology with running commentary by Bahnsen. Bahnsen usually opens each section with an intro, which is followed by many sections of Van Til's writings pertaining to the relevant topic, with lots of footnotes from Bahnsen analyzing, adding, and answering critics along the way. Van Til can be hard to read in places, as he is very well read, and expects his reader to be familiar with the history of Western philosophy. Bahnsen is very helpful here in the footnotes. The book has 9 chapters:
1. An Introduction to Van Til's Apologetic
2. The Task of Apologetics
3. A Simple Summary and Illustration
4. The Epistemological Side of Apologetics
5. The Apologetical Side of Epistemology
6. The Psychological Complexities of Unbelief
7. The Presuppositional Apologetical Argument
8. Comparisons and Criticisms of Apologetical Methods
9. Concluding Summary: How to Defend the Faith
It is saddening to know that this book has not and probably will not gain much of a hearing outside Presbyterian circles. Van Til really is a brilliant gift to the church and was crucial in the 'Reformation of Christian Apologetics.' One could not ask for a higher view of Scripture. Van Til took the lordship of Christ seriously, especially concerning the realm of knowledge.

--The gospel of the self-authenticating God speaking through Christ in Scripture offers man salvation, not only for his life, but for his science and philosophy and theology as well. (571)
--Christianity alone is reasonable for men to hold. It is wholly irrational to hold any other position than that of Christianity. Christianity alone does not slay reason on the altar of `chance.' (730)
--Every Evangelical, as a sincere Christian is at heart a Calvinist. But witnessing is a matter of the head as well as the heart. If the world is to hear a consistent testimony for the Christian faith, it is the Calvinist who must give it. (582)
--So in presuppositional apologetics we seek to "remove the enemy's foundation" by reducing his worldview to absurdity, thereby rendering the claims that constitute his case against the gospel unintelligible and demonstrating the necessity of the Christian worldview if we are to make sense of argumentation about reasoning about, and interpretation of, any element of human experience. (111)
--It is therefore mandatory that Reformed theologians urge their fellow Protestants everywhere to call upon modern man to interpret his life in terms of the book of God and therefore in terms of the God of the book. (713)

Bahnsen's Penetrating Analysis Of Van Til's Thought

This is presuppositional apologetics at it's finest! This is an authoritative anthology of the apologetics of Cornelius Van Til. The late Dr. Greg Bahnsen, who was a master at apologetic debate, organizes Van Til's thought in an extraordinary fashion. It is a great defense of presuppositional apologetics, with a tremendous confirmation of the transcendental argument. Bahnsen also shows the weakness of evidential apologetics, and how it is lacking on the noetic effects of sin. This is a must have handbook of apologetics. It will be of incredible value in defending the faith against atheism and false religion. Bahnsen also has a great footnote on Islam, who some think can go head to head with Christianity as a consistent theological system, but Bahnsen shows clearly the great inconsistency of Islam. I was thoroughly convinced that presuppositional apologetics is truly the biblical apologetic. This is my favorite apologetic book, and I highly recommend it to you.

The BEST book on Van Til's thought!

This book cannot be ignored by the Christian Defender. I was skeptical and had questions about Van Til's Transcendental Argument, but this book cleared it all up. In fact, it changed my apologetical methodology. I am no longer evidential in my approach, but presuppositional! Unfortunately, this method is deviant amongst the Christian circle. Thank God, that it is growing. The evidential Christian has much to answer to when reading this book!
As a seeker of the faith, I often read books that grasp the Aquinas type of theology. That is, books that support the Cosmological, Teleological, and Ontological argument for the existence of God. But in so using these arguments, one must be neutral in their approach. Is it indeed MORAL to be neutral in your apologetical approach? Read the book? Is the existence of God probable in which so many evidential apologist say it is? Read the book. Is Van Til's approach fideistic? Read the book. Is Natural Theology Biblical? Read the book.
Christian, if you are serious about apologetics, then you have to get this book! It's worth every penny.
Dr. Bahnsen is the best defender and debater on this apologetic. I recommend that you listen to his debate with Dr. Gordon Stein.

Insightful Analysis about the Sharing of Risk and Return between Entrepreneur and Outside Investor

The book builds on 'Entrepreneurial Finance' by Smith & Smith. Unfortunately, this new version is not as reader friendly as the second edition of this text. The new layout lacks color and is printed in black and white only, something that makes both tables and figures less attractive.

Conceptually, the book is closely related to the previous version. The chapter on venture capital is now presented much earlier in the book which makes the overall flow much better. One of the highlights of the book is the detailed analysis of the relationship between an under-diversified entrepreneur and a well-diversified outside investor. The authors show why an outside investor would participate in a venture and how this investor would participate in the venture's risk and return. Unfortunately, in this version the equilibrium solution is no longer presented. This should be included in any future edition of the book.

I bought this book for a class. My professor for the class is one of the coauthors and i have to say the book shows an easy way to apply important concepts for new Ventures. It is not deeply financial oriented, but has great information on how to finance a venture, and how to valuate new companies when trying to look for Venture Capital or PE.

WORST TEXTBOOK EVER

WORST textbook required in my entire MBA program. Have it for my very last class, subject same title as the book. It's so hard to comprehend the writing I've had to refer back to other textbooks from previous courses to get any kind of grasp on the subject material. Terribly written, confusing beyond measure. AND I'm a finance major with straight A's! Horrible.

A brilliant and innovative book linking hunger politics and migration studies. This book is both theoretically rigorous and full of rich ethnographic detail that give Carney's strong arguments a truly human dimension. Highly recommended for scholars studying food and nutrition, as well as migration. It's accessible enough to use in an upper-division undergraduate course.

The First Amendment's injunction that Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press seems cut and dried, but its application has had a vexed history, according to this lucid legal history, Lewis's first book in 15 years (after Make No Law and Gideon's Trumpet). Some suppressions of free speech passed constitutional muster in their day: the 1798 Sedition Act criminalized criticism of the president, and the WWI-era Sedition Act sentenced a minister to 15 years in prison for telling his Bible class that a Christian can take no part in the war. Law professor and Pulitzer Prize–winning ex-New York Times columnist Lewis explores other First Amendment legal quagmires, including libel law, privacy issues, the press's shielding of confidential sources, obscenity and hate speech. Not quite a free speech absolutist, he's for punishing speech that urges terrorist violence to an audience... whose members are ready to act. Lewis's story is about the advancement of freedom by the likes of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Louis Brandeis and others whose bold judicial decisions have made the country what it is. The result is an occasionally stirring account of America's evolving idea of liberty.

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Anthony Lewis was a columnist for the New York Times op-ed page from 1969 through 2001. In addition to his long and distinguished career with the Times, Mr. Lewis has been a lecturer on law at Harvard Law School and a visiting professor at the Universities of California, Illinois, Oregon, and Arizona, and, since 1983, the James Madison Visiting Professor at Columbia University. His previous books are Gideon's Trumpet and Make No Law. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

A Succinct, Entertaining History of Free Speech in the United States

Anthony Lewis cut his teeth writing at the New York Times and spent a significant portion of his career there. In this slim book, he traces the history of free speech from the Founding era through the post-9/11 debates about what is appropriate boundary between free expression and national security, and oftentimes ends up discussing cases he had firsthand knowledge of.

As Lewis points out, in the first decade following the American Revolution and the establishment of the Constitution, freedom of speech was not a significant issue. Most Americans were bound together, despite often extreme philosophical differences over governmental philosophy, and there were few attempts to oppress those on the opposing side. After John Adams succeeded George Washington to the presidency, however, the partisan chasm widened and harsh feelings grew. Allegedly fearing the tremors of the French Revolution and its possibility for chaos here (but really angered at Jefferson and his Democratic-Republican supporters), the Federalists in Congress passed the Alien & Sedition Acts of 1798 that criminalizes certain types of libelous speech by public figures, and the Adams administration signed off on them. Although relatively small by modern standards, dozens of Jeffersonians were arrested, tried, convicted, and then fined and/or thrown in jail. These actions produced such an uproar that they were soon rendered feckless by the American public, which swept Adams and the Federalists from power. Once Jefferson was inaugurated as president, he pardoned all of those prosecuted under the acts and remitted their fines. As Lewis notes, although the Supreme Court of the United States never ruled on the laws' constitutionality, today they would almost certainly be struck down as a violation of the First Amendment.

In the next section, Lewis covers the persecutions during, and subsequent to, World War One. Unfortunately, this jump forward in time is perhaps my biggest criticism of the book. Although Lewis does give a two-page summary that says there was no federal law restricting speech during this time, he certainly was aware that there were prosecutions during that time for sedition, particularly during the Civil War. Even if he had given a brief summary of whether or not it was the focus of much academic study or discussion in state courts that thereby influenced federal law later on would have been welcomed. However, this is a minor flaw in my opinion. The central figure of the World War One-era free speech trials is Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. A thrice-wounded hero of the Civil War, Holmes more than most could speak of what it took to defend or wreck a society, so when he reversed his prior stance of upholding the convictions of communists and labor organizers, it was a strong indication that federal government had gone too far. Lewis also discusses the origins of that famous phrase of law, "fire in a crowded theatre," which I particularly enjoyed. He does offer some criticisms of Holmes, however, noting that certain types of speech may have a cumulative effect that ultimately leads to criminal activity, rather than simply restricting prosecution to immediately approaching events as Holmes advocated.

The next chapters cover the Red Scares of McCarthyism, attempts at suppressing the main speakers of the Civil Rights Movement, the protests over the Vietnam War, and some major cases of the modern era. Lewis notes that recently obscenity has been almost totally removed as a justification for speech restrictions, but I wish he had discussed more what caused society and the Court to change its mind on the issue, and also how governments have utilized new tools, such as zoning laws, to achieve the same effects. In his final sections, Lewis discusses where the future of free speech lies and this is perhaps where I have my strongest disagreements with him. In one part, he discusses the path of Europe and its embrace of laws criminalizing hate speech. While I understand that speech can produce serious consequences, I think it is a dangerous idea to throw someone in jail for what they say about a particular religious, ethnic, sexual, or national group, no matter how crude the language. He also discusses issues of national security and the Bush administration (and now Obama administration)'s efforts to combat terrorist activity. I share his concern that we are approaching a dangerous line in what types of activity we are forbidding and what is a justifiable cause for intruding into someone's privacy, but nonetheless I suspect we will not have an accurate idea of what really went on during the War on Terror for another fifty years.

On the whole, I found this to be a great book for a layman. Lewis does not go into the more abstract parts of legal theory justifying free speech and unfortunately does not deeply detail the history of free speech leading up to the American Revolution. He does, however, provide the most important American cases on the subject and occasionally offers his own opinions (which I respect, if sometimes disagree with) without be pedantic. A great way to pass a weekend.

The understanding of this constitutional right, so argues Anthony Lewis, evolves through time, broadening it's scope. Specially attention is gave to the opinions of Justice Oliver W. Holmes, to whom the author attributed a major contribution to the realization of the first amendment. This is a readable book that deals with an important question in modern societies.

covers a multitude of fascinating First Amendment subjects

Lewis, the author of the terrific Gideon's Trumpet, among other legal books, presents an overview of issues, cases, and trends involving the First Amendment. When I was in school, I always thought that cases involving the First Amendment were difficult, often with more than one party having a compelling argument, but they had interesting facts.

This book is geared to the non-attorney and is not at all technical. It gets into a lot of interesting First Amendment subjects. Not just freedom of speech, freedom of the press, or freedom of association, but also such topics as obscenity (including the infamous legal line "I know it when I see it"), censorship, hate speech, flag burning, and campaign financing limits.

It's interesting for Lewis to suggest why the Court might've changed its mind, as it sometimes does.

Unfortunately, the book is from 2007 because I would have loved to have read Lewis' take on more recent First Amendment cases, such as the Citizens United case (applying the First Amendment to corporations).

Overall, though, I would highly recommend this book.
