Each chapter reads like a clumsy response to a "creative writing" prompt for a semiotics course: "write a short story based off delueze's concept of the ____"

clever and amusing

Well done, Alexandra Kleeman. In the beginning I thought this was going to be more millenial navel-gazing nonsense. But the more I read, the more I began to like and admire this tale of a strange and very creative dystopian world where A is obsessed with her body, inside and out. Not difficult to see why in a world where Tru Beauty cream is edible to make you beautiful inside and out, and the commercial features a model opening the jar to find a live dove and swallowing it. Hunger, on the other hand, because everything is twinned here, is most creatively seen through Kandy Kat, a cartoon character obsessed with Kandy Kakes, a food which contains no food at all, and what starts out as a Wile E. Coyote situation stops being funny when Kandy Kat begins literally starving to death, his fur falling off in the latest batch of commercials. The Church of the Conjoined Eater may have been inspired by Scientology but it's even weirder; members wear white sheets with holes cut out so they are indistinguishable and the highest attainable level is that of living ghost. And then there's all those men who are victims of Disappearing Dad Syndrome --
"Then last January dads started turning up, one by one. Good Samaritans found them wandering dazed in shopping malls five towns over, malls that were not their own but resembled their own to an uncanny degree. They would return to familiar stores like the Gap and try to buy khakis with little scraps of paper that they had collected from obscure places"
-- and the supermarket chain Wally's (the descriptions of which are hilarious) where the employees wear oversized masks so every Wally looks like every other one. Kleeman has to be riffing off the Wally World in National Lampoon's "Vacation" by creating its equivalent in a supermarket, where food shopping has become pilgrimage, where food is hanging from the chandeliers in ever-changing combinations, where food shopping promises to be a perfect experience but is anything but, and where the food is ultimately unattainable. The character of A engages in constant navel-gazing but some of that is actual navel-gazing; as in navel oranges. It's clever and amusing. All in all, a creative and interesting book.

I really liked reading this

I really liked reading this. Seems (based on a skimming of reviews) that it's pretty divisive. I like George Saunders, Miranda July, Lorrie Moore, Amy Bender, Mary Gaitskill...so if you like those folks, maybe you'll like this. If you read a lot of Nicholas Sparks or whatever, prob not. I think Kleeman will only get better. Other books in this vein: Green Girl by Kate Zambreno and Eileen be Otessa Moshfegh.
