Outstanding Translation and a Whole Lot MORE!!

As anyone can tell from my previous reviews, I don't pull punches or spare criticism when I encounter a TCM or Classical Chinese medical book that fails to deliver. Well, this delivers bigtime and I'm very pleased with it. The organization is didactic, the translations appear reasonable and, thank goodness, the full Hanzi, fully accented PinYin and the translation are close by and easily accessible.

It is obvious that meticulous scholarship went into the production of this book and it should prove to be the standard book on this topic for some time to come.

As an unexpected bonus, the reader is treated to an absolutely superb chapter towards the end of the book on the topic of a kind of introduction to the nuances of classical Chinese and the typical grammatical constructs and idioms characteristic of medical books of this era. It is one of the finest introductions I've seen on the topic and an unexpected treasure in a book filled with commentary, translations and explanations which make the work of the student a delight instead of an unending search through obscure dictionaries and readers.

As a graduate, not too long ago, of a medical college of Traditional Chinese medicine, I can say that this book will have a central spot on my medical bookshelf for some time to come!

Highly recommended and my profound thanks to the people involved in its production!

Difficult to sort through

For me, information in this book is organized in a way that makes its very difficult to differentiate the specificities between syndromes within each of the 6 stages. I think it is probably true that this book is an accurate translation of the Shang Han Lun, but what I was looking for was a source that would break down the Shang Han Lun into a simpler terms. Basically found Mitchell's book very difficult to sort through, and not helpful for studying.

"A Readers" review is factually incorrect and misleading

As the publisher of this book, there are several factual errors in the anonymous review posted here that I would like to address.

First, the "translation of a translation" comment is misleading. First century texts such as the Shang Han Lun are not books one pulls off a shelf. They were typically prepared on silk or bamboo, and their content is today known via a process called "collation" where archeological artifacts and references in later texts are studied to create a best possible idea of the orginal. The Shang Han Lun Yi Shi, on which this text is based, has been considered the standard by scholars for some time.

Secondly, the "translation of a translation" issue is germane only in texts that do not contain the source Chinese. Not only does this text contain the source Chinese, there are appendicies that contain a ground-breaking study of the Shang Han Lun terminology, and alternate orderings of the Chinese text. Importantly, the translators decisions are openly and transparently justified giving readers the opportunity and tools they need to decide questions for themselves. In the case of this translation, each passage in the text is accompanied, not only by the English translation, but by commentary on the terminology and translational decisions.

As regards the anonymous writer's contention that the commentaries are not by the author. This is simply false. Feng Ye, Md. Phd., is listed as an author; he is a professor at Chang Gung Medical College where he supervises and instructs graduate Chinese medicial doctors in a teaching hospital. Dr. Wiseman, the primary linguist, also teaches at Chang Gung Medical College and has widely published not only the term set but also the research on which this translation is based.

Everyone will make their own decision as to which Shang Han Lun best suits their needs, but that decision should not be informed by "a Reader's" factual errors.

NASHVILLE , Tenn. — Richard P. Seiter, Ph.D., CCA executive vice president and chief corrections officer, has been awarded the 2011 E.R. Cass Correctional Achievement Award by the American Correctional Association (ACA). This honor is awarded to only two people annually from the nation's oldest and highly regarded corrections organization, and represents the most distinguished recognition in the field.

Dr. Lannette C. Linthicum, director, Health Services Division, of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice was also honored.

�

The award is named after Edward R. Cass, whose career in corrections spanned more than half a century and who devoted more than 40 years to the ACA in the role of general secretary and, later, as president emeritus. According to the ACA, awardees of the E.R. Cass honor display "utmost devotion and distinction to the work and interests of the American Correctional Association" and demonstrate "service above and beyond the call of duty."�

Seiter was recognized due to his years of accomplishments and contribution to the field of corrections in many different ways and with several different agencies. He was a professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Saint Louis University from 2000 to 2005. During that time, he authored several articles and two textbooks on corrections, Corrections: An Introduction (2005/2008/2011) and Correctional Administration: Integrating Theory and Practice (2002/2011), both published by Pearson Prentice Hall.

Dr. Seiter worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for over 20 years, serving as a warden of two facilities and as assistant director. With the BOP, he also was the chief operating officer of Federal Prison Industries. From 1983 to 1988, he also served as director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC). In Ohio, he was a cabinet member and supervised an agency with 25,000 inmates and 8,000 staff.

Seiter was also the first director of the National Institute of Corrections' National Academy of Corrections in Boulder, Colo. And he joined CCA in his current role in January 2005, and has served in his current position since that time.� In this role, he oversees the operation of 66 prisons holding 80,000 inmates with 17,000 staff.�

Well-Written and Practical Advice

I really liked this book but I'm not giving it 5 stars because there wasn't any earth shattering new information in it. I did learn some things (about quercetin's role in mitochondria for example), but I'm fairly familiar with the topic so perhaps the information in the book would be more novel to those newer to the subject. This was an enjoyable read and is really loaded with practical advice. The author takes a holistic and integrated approach covering what he calls the "Five Circles of Fatigue".

Stress
Eating Habits
Hormones
Illness
Aging

The author includes a lot of information and recommendations on supplements which I think are valuable.

All in all I would recommend this to anyone who is suffering from fatigue or just wants to learn more about its causes and what you can do about them. Fatigue results from being unhealthy and so this is just great and simple advice on how to be healthier as well. Thumbs up.

Good information

This review is based on the Audible audiobook. I'm not quite finished with this book yet. All in all, I'm glad I got it. It has a lot of interesting stuff in it, even though I don't agree with all the suggestions.

The Cons: Jack Challem is really, really big on supplements. He is also really big on eating protein.

The Pros: A lot of good information on how inflammation is the root cause of a hosts of degenerative diseases here in America. Two thumbs up for this info. I knew some of this, but I learned a lot from this part of the book.

Not sure: The author rails on coffee/caffeine for what seem like the first quarter of the book. I sort of agree, but there are a lot of large studies that show coffee drinkers have a lot less of certain diseases than non-coffee drinkers. For instance (source WebMD):

A growing body of research shows that coffee drinkers, compared to nondrinkers, are:

* less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and dementia
* have fewer cases of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems, and strokes

I've been into alternative medicine since I was a teenager. At one time I would have eaten this book up. Again, I'm happy to have been exposed to the material, but I've kind of moved away from taking large amounts of supplements and moved more in the direction of trying to eat right and exercise more.

There are whole cultures around the world who do not get degenerative diseases like we do here in America, and a lot of them wouldn't know what supplements were. They also tend to eat less animal protein than we do, not more. I can't help but think we have so over complicated things here in America that we can't manage to live without taking handfuls of pills each day.

Having an alternative medicine background, though, if Challem's approach works for you, then good for you. I'm not absolutely opposed to things that work, even if how you get there is not optimum.

Personally, if people around the world can manage to live without getting degenerative diseases, it seems the solution is to look into what they are doing, not trying to keep doing what we are doing and relying on shovelling in the pills to attempt to counteract our poor diets. That's just me, though.

Excellent book!

I found Jack Challem's latest book very informative and comprehensive. Like so many of his other terrific tomes, Challem provides solid and scientific information presented in a user-friendly fashion with practical tips and solutions. As the author of a book entitled Why Am I Always So Tired?, I really appreciated Chellem's insights and suggestions. A very good read and essential for those who are tired all the time.

Fish lung is quite ancient

Although this book is a detailed survey and synthesis of air-breathing fishes, it is clearly written, and provides introductory background information on the subject. As is pointed out several times, while air-breathing fishes are often considered as the fishes which evolved the ability to breathe in the air, and then invaded the land to evolve into the land vertebrates, this is not entirely correct. The fish lung evolved in the ancestor to both the ray-finned fishes and the lobe-finned fishes, many millions of years prior to transition to land. In the Upper Devonian one of many different fishes with lungs, a group belonging the lobe-finned fishes, became amphibious and eventually evolved into the tetrapods. While the fish lung was conserved and exists in the modern lungfish, in the bulk of fishes, such as modern teleosts, the fish lung evolved into a non-respiratory gas bladder, used largely for buoyancy control. Nonetheless, for more than three hundred different species of modern freshwater, shallow fishes, air breathing is a valuable mechanism to cope with hypoxic water conditions, and was conserved or re-evolved.

The robbers weren't able to get money so they decided to go to a town lacking in women and auction them off, like measly cattle that had no choice.

Boaz Grady had fell off the deep end when his wife died in childbirth. After several years of being the town drunk he finally pulled his life together. Now he wanted his kids with him, for that he would need a wife. Good think he ran across his friend Herb and the auction.

Fears can become so deep that they paralyze us. Boaz had those kind of fears. If one wife died...another one could as well. This is also a reminder that life could be hard back in the day. Another good story from Ruth Ann Nordin and plenty of tidbits to get the reader wondering what will happen with Patty and Greg in the third book, Patty's Gamble. The first book in the series is Mitch's Win.

Boaz's Wager was a follow-up to Mitch's Win. While it was interesting to read Boaz's story, and finally see him happy and reunited with his children, I found the story to be very flat emotionally. Eva and Rachel are kidnapped, then sold by their kidnappers. While they initially showed some strong feelings (anger and fear), within an hour's time, they accepted the men who bought them and said their vows. I was hoping that Eva would have been angry for far longer...and why didn't she yell out to the crowd that they hadn't been found, but kidnapped? I found it appalling that the men and townspeople would just accept that women could be sold like livestock and nothing done about it.
I also waited for Eva to show anger and stand up for herself when Boaz informed her that their marriage wouldn't be a true marriage. Again, she just accepted her lot in life. There were few emotional highs and lows and really very little conflict. If you like that type of story, you will enjoy this. But personally, I like more to my story than a staid romance.

The uplifting story of an ambious Seagull

I read "Seagull" many tears ago and have never forgotten the message that the author sends in that wonderful little book. I have given the book as a gift many times.
I am retired now, 85 years old. One day recently I thought of the book and how its story had boosted me over low points in my life so many times. I realized it was no longer on my shelf so I got on Amazon and ordered another copy right away. I have read it twice in recent days.
I know it is a fictional story but the message it sends is overwhelmingly good for the soul.

JLS - A fun, wonderful communication about ability

I recently re-read this great book because I saw that there is now the additional Part Four (and an afterword that tells why/how, after 40 years, it has been added - Nice!). I decided to read and enjoy the book again - absorbing the message newly, smile at the "original" end (as I knew I would) and, then, read the new part and the added afterword.

Without any doubt, JLS is one of the best - if not the best - "messengers" for the idea that we... Ayy! Read it! Enjoy the message your way!

JLS ends wonderfully in Part Three, which is the way anyone would have gotten it before 2014. The new part is a nice addition. The newly added Part Four looked like it was going to be mildly superfluous - right up until the last page; however, I could see why it was originally written and originally not included. I am glad that it was added and glad that he didn't add it until now. Now, it is timely (in my opinion). I am also more than glad that he included the explanatory afterword, called "Last Words".

Something that I noticed this time, having read "Illusions" many times since reading JLS, is that "Illusions" really does fill out the concept that JLS gives. He states as much in the "Illusions" foreword and while re-reading JLS, I easily and comfortably saw the clarifying and concept-extending nature of "Illusions". I used to call "Illusions" my favorite book - bar none, but I now look at JLS and "Illusions", together, as my favorite: the first sets up the second and, to me, does it such that they take on a character where their combination is more exhilarating than either one by itself. That is pretty cool (to me)!

Not better than the original

Much as I loved the original, for it's allegoric value and depth, the complete version actually looses on deeper message the original conveyed. There is a saying that says, something is not perfect when there is nothing more you can add to it, but when there is nothing that you can take from it. This falls firmly in that category. Still, enjoyable, but recommended only for us hard core fans of Richard Bach.

The inside scoop on ecovillages, co-housing, etc.

To me, Finding Community was even more useful and entertaining than Diana Leafe Christian's previous book, Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities. It is full of inside information and tips for those of us interested in the possibility of joining an intentional community. The book is also witty and highly entertaining, with lots of anecdotes from specific communities. The book explains the variety of communities on the spectrum from income-sharing communes, to ecovillages, to co-housing, to Christian communities. It de-mystifies the financial issues and also the process of applying and actually joining. Particularly valuable to me, in light of global warming and peak oil, were the forward by Richard Heinberg and the appendix on ecovillages as lifeboat communities after the oil crash.

Environmental issues are becoming more urgent and more prominent with each passing year. More and more members of the general public are trying to live 'eco-friendly' lifestyles. For many, this includes living in eco-villages or communities of like-minded people. "Finding community: How To Join An Ecovillage Or Intentional Community by environmental activist Diana Leafe Christian is, quite literally, a 'how to' manual of instructions, case studies, anecdotes and information about life in an eco-village and becoming a member of a eco-friendly community. Of special note is a North American 'What It Costs' table coving both the United States and Canada and such issues as questions to be asked of community members and oneself, signs of a healthy (and not-so-healthy) community, the costs of joining and staying in a community, as common blunders to be avoided. Enhanced with sample community membership documents and an essay 'Can Living in Community Make a Difference in the Age of Peak Oil?', "Finding Community" should be considered a 'must read' by every environmentally conscious and conscientious man and woman in North America, as well as an essential addition to school and community library Environmental Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

A solid introduction

If you feel that the world is crumbling all around you into chaos and feel that you absolutely must escape from the city, then this is the book that you need to read. It's definitely a sound introduction to ecovillages, communes, and intentional communities. Whether you are a "cultural creative" or someone seeking "voluntary simplicity," if you're ready to move now to one then you should, don't wait any longer just join the wave. With that said, I still feel that you will fare much, much better if you read this first and go tomorrow, as opposed to not reading it and going today. I hope that made sense. With this book in hand you should have just enough head knowledge in order to make your dreams a reality. It'll help you understand the different types of communities that are out there, and will help you to understand that you will fit better into certain types of them instead of just "whatever's closest." But for those who are already familiar with ICs and ecovillages, I'd say there are probably better books out there for you. All in all, I found Finding Community to be a solid introduction to the subject.
