"In my end is my beginning."
By R. M. Peterson
My guess is that T.S. Eliot is a more difficult biographical subject than most. What was the essence of Thomas Stearns Eliot: modernist poet ne plus ultra? religious mystic? custodian of the Western cultural tradition? sexually befuddled J. Alfred Prufrock? "the undertaker" (Ottoline Morrell's nickname for him)? "Old Possum"? V.S. Pritchett once described him as "a company of actors inside one suit". The only other biography of Eliot that I am familiar with is Lyndal Gordon's, which I tried reading but was unable to get more than about a third of the way through. Peter Ackroyd's biography is not ideal, but in my opinion it is better than Gordon's.

In his biography, Ackroyd sets out to explore foremost the connection between Eliot's life and his work. I sense that he succeeds admirably. A consequence of his dual focus -- life and work -- is that Ackroyd does not stint on either basic biographical information or analysis of Eliot's literary works. His discussion of Eliot's literary output comprehends the plays and literary and cultural criticism as well as the poetry for which Eliot is most famous. Another consequence of Ackroyd's approach is that moderate familiarity with Eliot's oeuvre, or at least with his poetry, is almost a precondition for reading T. S. ELIOT. Nonetheless, Ackroyd does not overdo his literary analysis; T. S. ELIOT remains more a biography than a work of literary criticism.

I think Ackroyd captures well some of the distinctive themes of Eliot's life, such as his quest for order in the midst of an increasingly chaotic and fragmented modern world. This, more than "faith" as conventionally understood, prompted Eliot's turn to the Church of England -- something that mystified so many acolytes of "The Waste Land". It also is related to the almost liturgical style of the later poetry, especially "Four Quartets".

I particularly appreciated the wealth of humanizing details. For example, "detective fiction was [Eliot's] passion -- he could quote long passages of Sherlock Holmes from memory (this was one of his party tricks), and in later years he liked to discuss with friends the work of Georges Simenon and Raymond Chandler". He worked the crossword puzzle daily, and he relished playing solitaire (when W. H. Auden asked him why, Eliot said, "Well, I suppose it's the nearest thing to being dead."). And in his later years of life, Eliot liked to read to his second wife in the evening before turning in: Rudyard Kipling's "Kim" was an especial favorite.

Ackroyd's prose is decidedly British, but even for British writing of the late twentieth century it is somewhat mannered. His biography has a more pronounced psychological orientation than I would like, but not so much as Lyndal Gordon's. A bonus is the sixty-plus photographs that are included. Indeed, corroborating the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, several of the photographs of Eliot (including a great one of him as a twelve-year-old lad) convey more of his essence than pages of Gordon . . . or Ackroyd, for that matter. Still, for those somewhat knowledgeable of Eliot's work and interested in an intelligent, non-sensationalist biography of the man, I recommend Ackroyd's T. S. ELIOT.

The best biography of a poet I have read
By Dr Brinsley Burbidge
Probably the best biography of poet I have ever read. Extraordinarily well researched and with some compelling insights into the sources of Eliot's inspiration and his creative process. While pulling no punches when looking at Eliot's less-than-generous relationships with many other writers and his disastrous long-lasting first marriage, it keeps the emphasis away from the "gossipy" aspects of Eliot's personality and focuses relentlessly on his poems and what he though about them. It also makes understandable (just) Eliot's very peculiar relationship with the church. The source bibliography is invaluable and shows the depth of Mr. Ackroyd's background research. A biography of a creative writer that only another creative writer can deliver.

A Good Standard
By Mr Tony London
Peter Ackroyd's book is very well researched and it gives the reader important insights into the struggles Eliot faced when writing. I read the original in a villa in France and was delighted to get my own copy to peruse at leisure.
