A wonderful and life-changing book

I have found this really, really inspiring and freeing - was panicking about my career options and what I wanted to do, and felt as though I was floundering in my inertia to want to do everything and so doing nothing, and this has made me realise that I'm not alone, and that I have far more options than I ever thought I did - I just need to embrace this side of my personality. Really has been an eye-opener. I love the activities that she lays out, and have really enjoyed keeping a scanner book and exploring all my creative ideas. It's also helped me to let go of projects that I have half-finished and feel guilty about neglecting, or hobbies that I have dropped that people make me feel bad about ("It's such a shame you don't sing anymore, you could've had a successful music career" etc). Really have let go of a lot of shoulds and am enjoying my approach to life, hobbies and career ideas. Also love reading about other people and the career and life choices they have made. Barbara Sher seems such a lovely and committed woman and I love dipping in and out of this book still.

Finally! I feel understood, validated and liberated to be who I am!

This is the best book I've read in a very long time. Once I read the first page I couldn't put it down. I read the whole book in about 24 hrs straight through (with a 3 hour nap in the middle). I couldn't take it all in fast enough. It felt as though my brain was re-wiring itself as I read. Barbara absolutely gets what it's like to be a renaissance woman of many interests, passions and new ideas and she gives her readers not just the permission but the full support, blessing and encouragement to embrace our multi-tasking, idea generating, always creating, easily bored minds and to do a celebratory dance around our newfound interests. She empowers you with a loaded arsenal of applicable, super practical real world tools, steps and ideas for how to harness and actualize the potential in your ideas and actually put them on the runway of action by engaging with those ideas through a variety of means...from mere sampling to full mastery. I've recommended this book to about 5 or 6 people since I started reading it yesterday. If you're a Jack/Jane of all trades and find yourself insatiably curious and always starting projects you find yourself quickly bored with and abandoning you absolutely must read this book. It will profoundly change the way you understand your inner dreamer/idea generator.

Barbara Saves My Ass Again!

I'm definitely a Scanner, and even though I might be a high-functioning ADD, I'm still so far from the satisfied 9 to 6 crowd. Barbara's webboard and Wishcraft saved me from a sucky corporate job back in my mid twenties. Now, as I contemplate 40 next year & starting my own small business, I'm turning to Barbara again! There are so many types of Scanners described in this book. I feel like I could be all of them, and it is just gratifying to have this full acceptance of being a Scanner. And to be able to fine-tune it even! Sybil and Serial Specialist call out to me the most, but I am capable of a little Sampler & High Speed Indecisive. Can't wait to plan my next move based on her suggestions now! I have finally learned how to motivate myself through the overwhelming number of passions that I have! Go, go, go!!

PREFACE

Collaborative academic projects often take longer than originally anticipated, not just because of the normal delays of coordinating the efforts of busy people but also because initially modest goals can become more ambitious as participants delve into their subject. We confess to both these sins with respect to preparing the first edition of this text. Our original plans made in 1990 were very modest. We intended to use an expanded version of the chapter on cost-benefit analysis in the text Policy Analysis: Concepts and Practice by David Weimer and Aidan Vining as the conceptual foundation for a collection of cases. Our goal was to produce a book that would be conceptually sound, practically oriented, and easily accessible to both students and practitioners. Though our final product was far different in form and content than we initially planned, we believe that our first edition was such a book.

Our plans evolved for a number of reasons. Perhaps most importantly, through our teaching of undergraduate and graduate students as well as our experiences training government employees, we realized that many topics demanded extended treatment if the essential basics were to be effectively conveyed and solid foundations laid for further learning of advanced topics. We also decided that fully integrating illustrations and examples with concepts and methods is pedagogically superior to presenting independent cases. The result was a series of chapters that develop conceptual foundations, methods of application, and extensions of cost-benefit analysis through numerous practical examples and illustrations.

Our own use of the book in teaching, as well as comments from other teachers and students, helped us identify several areas for improvement in this second edition. In addition to adding new material, including an entire chapter on applying cost-benefit analysis in developing countries, we revised and reorganized many chapters to make the presentation clearer and more effective. For example, we essentially rewrote the chapter on the social discount rate, added considerable new material on obtaining shadow prices from secondary sources, expanded the discussion of the value of information, and divided two long chapters into shorter and more manageable ones.

These improvements were made with our three intended audiences in mind. First, we intend the book for use in courses on public-sector decision making offered in graduate programs in public policy analysis, urban planning, public administration, business, economics, public health, and environmental studies. Second, we envision it being used at the undergraduate level either as a primary text for a course on cost-benefit analysis or as a supplementary text for economics courses in public finance, public-sector economics, and policy analysis. Third, we intend it to be useful to policy analysts and public managers as a general introduction and practical guide to cost-benefit analysis, as well as a starting point for exploring advanced topics. In order to be appropriate for these diverse audiences, the second edition continues to emphasize clear discussion over formal mathematics, and application over abstract theory. Nevertheless, we think that we cover important, if difficult, conceptual issues in adequate detail both as a framework for thoughtful application and as a basis for further study.

The process of preparing the second edition has been a rewarding one for us. As during preparation of the first edition, we were forced to think more deeply about some topics that we thought we had already mastered and to develop others with which none of us was very familiar. We did this enjoyably together through numerous exchanges of drafts and during an intensive work session at the University of British Columbia.

Even the prof had a difficult time getting through it

I had to buy this book for a class I took on Cost-benefit analysis (which is probably why you're thinking of buying it, too). The contents of my review won't have much influence on your choice to purchase it, as that decision has already been made by your prof. But I think I owe you a few warnings.

Some of the chapters are well-written (the chapters on discounting and compounding and time value), but most of them are confusing (the chapters on option value and the section about the optimal growth discount model). Even our professor, who has a BA in econ from Yale and a PhD in econ from Berkeley, had trouble getting through these sections. Some of the homework problems at the ends of the chapters ask about material that the text never fully explains. In a few instances, the book reminds you why you hate integral calculus.

So although I can't stop you from buying this, I can at least warn you that your trip through its pages will be nothing like a trip through the beautiful mountains on the cover. Unless you were planning on climbing the mountains. In January. Without GPS or crampons.

Not the most useful, but comprehensive.

This book by Anthony Boardman et al. is a heavy read. It is not a book you would want to read from A to Z in order to understand Cost-Benefit Analysis or CBA, but it is one of the better reference books I have found. The only downside I found was a very theoretical approach and lack of really useful examples. Nevertheless, not one element of CBA seems to be left untouched. This book is a valuable reference to anyone relying on CBA as a decision-making tool, because it will assist you in understanding what it is that you are analyzing when applying CBA.

Not recommended

I've read 5 chapter so far, and this is by far one of the worst textbooks i ever read. Some of the examples are pretty bad, explanations of some concepts are also short and confusing, and (as another reviewer said) some of the problems given in the end of the chapters use techniques and concepts that were not explained in the book! Even the prof is confused!
Ignore if you can.

Basic Black

Professor Black, who is known for a school of thought he calls "pure sociology", proposes that aberrant behaviour occurs due to stress caused by change across 3 dimensions: intimacy, hierarchical relations (stratification) and diversity, either too much or too little of each. The last category is refined further into traditional/non-traditional, race/homogeneity, and innovation (in art, science, culture) vs sameness. In each section of this relatively short book (152 pages with an additional 160 pages of references) he introduces his terms and then gives extensive and interesting examples or how changes in status create conflict between different members of a society.

The examples come from a large variety of human cultures and the book is impressive on this basis alone - there's behaviour considered normal in any one culture that would offend in many others. However, as to the theory itself I remain unconvinced and though the number of examples is overwhelming he has not entirely made his case because he fails to consider counterexamples. For example, Black states that each of his dimensions are zero sum experiences - that if one increases intimacy with one person one reduces intimacy with another, that if one person rises (or falls) in a hierarchy that others are lowered. However if two individuals who are not in love with anyone fall in love there is a net increase in intimacy. Black argues that having children reduces intimacy between partners, which sounds like sour grapes, but (in my experience) it changes the nature of that intimacy and ultimately increases one's capacity to love. The same can be true of wealth - if one creates a new product or method, or creates a piece of art, then that may enrich the originator but there is also the possibility of enriching countless others. Whereas Prof. Black tries to give his theory the aura of hard science by using the analogy of a temporal dimension and a conservation law, IMV the zero-sum hypothesis aspect fails because he is unable to assign a numeric scale to the degree of difference or the rate of change. If one can't measure then one cannot declare a balance of zero.

However the notion that changes in social distance is more likely to cause conflict than actual distance is very attractive though he might have taken this further by looking into the rate of change as a factor. Great examples, though some are just interesting and don't relate to the theory. in many cultures (the middle Ages in Europe, the American South vis a vis blacks, the Qing Dynasty in China, the Zapotec Indians of Mexico to name a few) there were written and unwritten codes the made it a crime to act "uppity", either in the presence of one's social "betters" or, as in the case of and egalitarian group such union workers, being too enthusiastic or productive. Inuit, Botswana Bushmen and the Buid of Malaysia are all highly egalitarian, disapproving of those with greater success in a hunt. In Andalusia Spain being a peeping tom is considered a crime of over familiarity - men apparently will do it in groups for protection, but males close to the victim will liken it to rape and feel justified in reacting violently. Pueblo Indians would execute those who would reveal their ritual secrets - overexposure - but consider the US government imprisons and has executed spies for similar reasons.

Because of the focus on negative rather than positive conflict an outsider might despair at the human condition. However what I find more plausible is that Black's theories may serve as framework for exceptional cases of overreaction. At the very end Black advocates for a global morality as a higher plane of existence. It's an attractive article of faith, but not well enough argued.

I'm undecided as yet on the long term value of his sociology but the writing is interesting enough to give it further consideration. The fascinating anthropology brings my rating up to 4*.

Moral Time changes everything

What do crime, law, racism, witchcraft, the Ten Commandments, bad manners, virtue, LSD trips, economic success, and insanity have in common? In MORAL TIME, Donald Black shows how all of these diverse behaviors, ideas, and prohibitions (and many, many more) represent either movements or attempts to limit movements in "social time," a newly discovered dimension of social reality that reflects the dynamic fluctuation of relational, vertical, and cultural space. No other social scientific theory explains more with less. And no other social scientific theory is illustrated with such fascinating examples from across history and around the world. MORAL TIME is an intellectual feast and a captivating read for specialists (including sociologists, criminologists, psychologists, and philosophers) as well as general readers.

The sociological nature of morality

MORAL TIME addresses an issue at the heart of sociology, criminology, and related fields: why moral conflict occurs, why anything is defined as deviant or criminal. The answer is that movements of social time cause conflicts. SOCIAL TIME, in Black's terminology, refers to fluctuations of SOCIAL SPACE, which itself consists of fundamental sociological properties such as intimacy, stratification, and diversity. Conflict is thus the result of changes in intimacy (such as when someone begins or ends a new relationship), stratification (such as when someone obtains or loses a job), and diversity (such as when someone accepts a new religion or rejects an old one). And bigger and faster changes cause more conflict. Rape, for example, is a sudden increase in intimacy. It is deviant, and a rape by a stranger is even more deviant - punished more severely - since a greater increase in intimacy is involved.

MORAL TIME thus offers a framework for explaining both the occurrence of conflict (when people define something as deviant) and the severity of conflict (how deviant deviant behavior is). It also offers a framework for classifying deviance. All deviant behaviors - from crimes to bad manners - are movements of social time. Not only rape, but trespass, incest, masturbation, voyeurism, nudity, adultery, and lying involve changes in intimacy. Robbery, slander, homicide, insubordination, and even success involve changes in stratification. Heresy, blasphemy, proselytizing, and cross-dressing involve changes in diversity. Black examines these offenses (and many more) in light of the theory. The result is an amazingly wide-ranging cross-cultural and historical account of crime and deviance - one that addresses such seemingly disconnected topics as the incest taboo, Jim Crow laws in the early 20th century American South, the Holocaust, the belief in the "evil eye" in many tribal societies, the music of Kurt Cobain, the modern human rights movements, and much more. Sociologists, criminologists, and anyone interested in conflict and morality should find MORAL TIME valuable.

Rented it for the semester and it was super easy and way cheaper than purchasing the book

Rented it for the semester and it was super easy and way cheaper than purchasing the book. The textbook itself is very well written and pretty easy to read (despite being over 600 pages long), though I didn't like that it was so big and has a soft cover, since I was worried about bending the cover and wanted to return it in good condition. I'll definitely be renting textbooks through Amazon again, and found the textbook much more applicable and readable that it seemed.

I needed this ridiculously expensive book for school, so thought I'd try amazon.com for my school book needs, I'm so glad I did. Not only did I save TONS of money, I LOVED the style of the book, it came in a 3 ring binder, so I didn't have to lug the whole book around with me, I could just take the section I needed saving my back from being overly stressed.

I bought the book for school, a used version, but would like to specify that it was a soft cover book, not in a three hole binder, and it was not hard cover. It was like new!!! fantastic condition !
The book itself is also a little bit funny, they have some cute jokes and the author makes it easy to understand.

Rick Stein, British TV seafood cooking instructor and seafood restaurant owner, wasn't able to get every recipe he loves into his first book, Taste of the Sea. So he wrote Fruits of the Sea.

Where Taste of the Sea was a kind of introduction to seafood cooking for those a bit hesitant about trying different kinds of fish, Fruits of the Sea is more like Stein's launching pad. He assumes he is preaching to an enthusiastic choir. Much of his information is right to the point, and his style of instruction is more refined. All the techniques for prepping different kinds of fish are described in clear language as well as illustrated in detailed photos. Included, too, is a discussion of many of the unusual ingredients Stein pulls into his recipes for that extra dash of brilliant flavor--preserved lemons, for example, or kaffir lime leaves.

It comes as little surprise, then, that Stein opens with recipes like Basque Squid Stew, Moroccan Fish Tagine, Seafood in a Crab and Ginger Broth, and Mussels with Turmeric, Cumin, and Coriander.

He breaks his recipes into soup, stews, and clear broths; light lunch dishes; hot and spicy fish; deep-fried fish; summer fish and salads; fish from colder climates; elegant fish dishes; quick and simple fish; hand-held and party food; and food to finish with. As in the first book, you'll also find basic stocks and sauces and a list of alternative fish for the American and Australian markets. The user-friendly Fruits of the Sea will launch anyone, even a reader who may have been a bit reluctant to take the plunge, on a discovery of seafood. --Schuyler Ingle

About the Author
Rick Stein is a well-loved and respected chef, TV presenter and author who has produced an array of award-winning books and television series, including Rick Stein's Seafood, Seafood Lover's Guide, Taste of the Sea, Food Heroes, French Odyssey, Mediterranean Escapes, Coast to Coast and Far Eastern Odyssey. All of his books and programmes show a commitment to good-quality produce, sustainable fishing and good husbandry. Rick owns four restaurants, a delicatessen, a patisserie, a seafood cookery school and forty guest bedrooms in the small fishing port of Padstow, Cornwall. In 2003, Rick was awarded an OBE for services to West Country Tourism. He divides his time between Padstow and Australia, which he regards as his second home.

Simply smashing!!!

My sister in law was visiting from England and referred us to this chef. This is an excellent book. The photos are perfect and the recipes are outstanding! My wife made the salmon in pastry and it was like a 5 star restaurant entree. Our guests were amazed and even we were impressed with the presentation and results. Easy to follow instructions and information make this book delightful to read and fun to explore. Well done all around!

Oh that Rick Stein !

Rick Stein and his 'Taste of the Sea' series ran on PBS (or at least on KQED, SF) a few years back, and we miss his slightly off-center humor and antics -- but especially his on-location recipes, often prepared with the characters who provided them to him. In addition to fun memories of the series, these recipes will give you many delicious meals to savor. A good read, and a very good cook book.

I just got this book 2 days ago and haven't put it down! What an eye OPENER; from being taught all my life about all these WHITE achievements in science and technological ADVANCES in research for our health benefit. Just to find out these "DISCOVERIES" were already here from AFRICAN KNOWLEDGE and disguised as some MODERN ADVANCEMENT! So this book is nice and really hits home for me being a woman of color and having a family to take care of. It's time for us BLACK FOLKS to start reconditioning our minds and realize that THIS AMERICAN GOVERNMENT DOESN'T HAVE OUR BEST INTEREST!!!! Please BROTHERS AND SISTERS READ!!! Knowledge is POWER :-D
