By turns heartbreaking, hilarious, and utterly human, The House of God is a mesmerizing and provocative journey that takes us into the lives of Roy Basch and five of his fellow interns at the most renowned teaching hospital in the country. Young Dr. Basch and his irreverant confident, known only as the Fat Man, will learn not only how to be fine doctors but, eventually, good human beings.Samuel Shem has done what few in American medicine have dared to do-create an unvarnished, unglorified, and amazingly forthright portrait revealing the depth of caring, pain, pathos, and tragedy felt by all who spend their lives treating patients and stand at the crossroads between science and humanity. With over two million copies sold worldwide, The House of God has been hailed as one of the most important medical novels of the twentieth century and compared to Sinclair Lewis's Arrowsmith for its poignant portrayal of the education of American doctors.

"Fascinating." ---The Wall Street Journal
From the Publisher
"Brilliant !" -- Chicago Tribune. "Bawdy blistering... this is Catch-22 with stethoscopes." --Cosmopolitan.
Now a classic! The hilarious novel of the healing arts that reveals everything your doctor never wanted you to know. Six eager interns -- they saw themselves as modern saviors-to-be. they came from the top of their medical school class to the bottom of the hospital staff to serve a year in the time-honored tradition, racing to answer the flash of on-duty call lights and nubile nurses. But only the Fat Man --the calm, all-knowing resident -- could sustain them in their struggle to survive, to stay sane, to love-and even to be doctors when their harrowing year was done.
"Does for the practice of medicine what Catch-22 and M*A *S *H did for the practice of warfare." -- The Newark Star-Ledger
"Wildly funny... frightening... outrageous, moving... a story of modern medicine rarely, if, ever told." -- The Houston Chronicle

Splendid and brilliant -- literally a lifesaver for anyone in the modern healthcare environment.
By Sanpaku
Absolutely a requirement for anyone in the medical field -- especially newcomers, interns, new nurses, patients who need to know how the hospital experience will work (or not work) &c.
Hilarious-because-its-true details of the writer's intern year in a major Boston teaching hospital. This book has been a long-time classic for healthcare professionals, and really should be considered required reading.
Samuel Shem (author) is a nom de plume for Stephen Joseph Bergman, an accomplied writer and professer of psychiatry at Harvard University. The hospital -- the House of God -- is probably Beth Israel in Boston. Bergman's work in terms of outreach to the community as evidenced by his books, House of God, Mount Misery, and others, is seminal work and brilliatnly done.
Anyone who, for any reason, will spend time in a hospital, should read this book twice!

Only for those in the industry
By Marta
There's something about this book. Sex-mad and depressing and dehumanising though it is, it captures a little something in the life of a health professional who's just coming to grips with the depths of his responsibilities.
There's a lot not to like. The focus of sex as release and as nurses as little more than objects to assist that release grates after a while - I can't help feeling the author could have made his point with a couple of illustrations rather than a book's full of almost-porn that, I imagine (not having read it), might rival 50 Shades.
But the fact remains that this is supposed to be a send up. It's supposed to be irreverent and over-the-top and yet, despite that, present the reality of medicine. People die despite one's best efforts. Other people don't die though they and their families and the health workers themselves know that a peaceful death would be the most merciful thing to grant them.
The reality is, doctors and nurses are people and people make mistakes. The reality is that sometimes, when a shift gets crazy, the only way to cope is to make a patient's problem someone else's concern, not yours. (The Fat Man's infamous BUFF and TURF and pray that there's no BOUNCE). The reality is that when you're under the pressure night after night, learning the trade and trying to deal with the pressures of life in a busy hospital, it can be hard to remember that those you care for can be human is.
But sometimes… sometimes we get it right. Sometimes intervention is uncalled for. To DO NOTHING and just BE AVAILABLE is instead the best approach. Sometimes we cry when those we've come to care for Go to Ground, or God. Sometimes, we earn the respect and gratitude of those we work to save. Those times are what make a career in the health industry worth it.
So do I like this book? I'm still not sure. I'm a new nurse. It was recommended to me by an anaesthetist who assured me that in amongst the craziness, I'd see every day I'd ever spent at a hospital and do you know what? I did. In some ways, it fascinated me. In others, it made me shake my head because the reality is rarely as bleak and uncompromising as presented. Rarely… but sometimes.
If you're not in the industry, avoid this book because without background knowledge I think it can't fail to be repulsive. But if you are and can stomach gratuitous sex and poo without end, then maybe it's worth giving it a go. If nothing else, it will make you think.
3.5 stars.

Hyperbolic but intriguing look into a doctors first year of residency.
By Andrew W. Wong
My how things have changed. I did my internship in 2011 and did not encounter half of the things documented in this satire. True, there is a system of 'slurpers' who are moving their way up the hospital chain. There are self righteous residents who care more about being right than helping the patient. But there are no midnight trysts with nurses or blatant euthanasia. Thankfully I don't know of any suicides except for a terrible experience with a classmate in medical school. Supervision has much improved and supervising physicians are available at every turn.
However, the one thing that rings true is that compassion for the patient reigns supreme. If that is the one lesson learned from this book by young doctors-to-be, I pray that is it.
The afterword is preachy and self indulgent. The author is unintentionally hilarious by advocating for a system that is devoid of the evil money making schemes of hospitals and insurance companies. He envisions a system of limited bureaucracy where doctors are free to care (gratis, I suppose, by his implication) for patients without extraneous factors. His solution? A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT run healthcare system. I'm guessing he never had the privilege to work at a VA, with its indifferent employees, inefficient system, never ending paperwork, 'too full, do it yourself' consultants and overall depressing atmosphere. Perhaps he should do some moonlighting and discover the wonders of the VA himself.
