If You are Expecting an Intro Book with Examples that Work, Don't Buy This One
By James Quinn
You'd think a tech book that uses a VM download to set the environment correctly would have examples that worked. Not this one. In example after example the code does not work. Good idea. Really poor execution. To use these examples you will be Google-hacking over and over. Also, the authors seem to never have taught anyone before: for example, they don't provide simple instructions to shut down the VM and save the state, they use different syntax style from chapter to chapter and when they start a new example they don't provide basic instructions on how to get right to the example. They just don't think through what a tutorial needs to do for 'Dummies'. Another example, in chapter 6 they introduce a "Flights by Carrier" example. It is needs to be setup on the VM you downloaded earlier. The VM gives everyone the same environment with the same directory structure. They tell introductory readers to "go to your directory with your Java code and compile it using the following command". Someone more familiar with training users would have listed the command to "go to the directory with your Java code". Readers not familiar with the Linux VM will be hacking around for a while in order to get there. For an intro book, this is just not acceptable. They make mistakes like this over and over.

A missed opportunity.
By W. J. Vovil
Had promise; but even the instructions for setting up bigtop did not work and the HDFS commands were wrong. I liked the author's style and approach but a technical book MUST have accurate commands for examples, especially when the environment is provided and under the control of the author. I am a BIG Data expert in this field and was going to recommend this book to beginners; but alas cannot. I would be willing to assist in rectifying the errors but could not contact author :-)

Don't buy this book if you care about the examples working.
By Jeff Gordon
I bought this book mainly for the lab exercises and hands on experience. Very disappointed that there are so many errors. I couldn't even get the very first example to work.
